Duplicator or collector?

There are many items in my closet - from swim suits, to shorts, to sweaters - that I duplicate out of a feeling of necessity. Then there are berets. I don’t need lots of hats, but berets have become signature to my cold weather style, and I just love them! It’s hard for me to pass when I find a Parkhurst wool beret in a new colour. I’m a collector!

Last month I found a merlot beret that exactly matches my merlot Coach bag, and since it was on my list, I brought it home!

Are there any categories where you ‘duplicate’ buy are actually a ‘collector’?

This is a great question. I think when there's a signature element of style, duplicating in different colors makes a lot of sense!

I think the closest I am to doing this right now, is with the Soft 7 slip on Ecco sneakers. I started with the black and they are so great I recently added the gold. I would happily add a third pair if I found a color that I liked.

I haven't duplicated them yet, but I adore my canvas Taos so much in the seafoam green I would definitely buy this style in another color if I saw one that worked for me. The canvas is great for our hot summers.

I have 4 pairs of the same cut COS jeans in different colors. I probably don’t need to have 4 since I have other jeans. But they became my favorite this year. I don’t have that many multiple items in any category, the most I buy 2.

P.S. I bough a black wool beret from Joe Fresh recently as an experiment. I love berets on others and tempted to try them myself once in a while.

My favorite wide leg jeans in slightly cropped length ( spring/summer workhorses ) - all 3 washes plus one more in bigger size for the weight fluctuations. And now I've got them in full length in black and washed grey - just smart shopping in my book ( or I'd call myself " collector" - thank you for the idea! ) .

Probably as Angie says...I do both. I think my only collection in clothes/accessories would be scarves and jewelry. And I definitely have more than I need of both.

Oh, your berets are definitely signature! And yes, that's a collection, not a bunch of practical duplication.

I don't think I do this...but I might like to start! I mean, like Peri, I have a lot of scarves. And they are a signature element of my winter style, for sure. But they aren't all identical in shape, colour, fabric. So I'm not sure they really count as a collection.

And good question! Collecting to me is having a collection to develope and curate and wanting to include certain items in it even though I do not necessarily “need” them or want to wear them. I collect scarves and have a very large collection. I buy some scarves even though they are not in colours or patterns which flatter me, just because they are beautiful and I want to have them in my collection. I also have som vintage scarves from the forties and fifties which I do not wear to preserve them. Most of my scarves, though, I actually wear or can wear. Some I don’t wear every year.
I also collect interesting brooches.
Everything else in my wardrobe is not really a part of any particular collection in the same sense as scarves and brooches, although I have a small collection of gloves and quite many bags. These items I buy to use and I don’t want to duplicate them.
The items I do duplicate I duplicate for practical reasons - and as anxious duplication sometimes. I duplicate black or navy silky shirts, black trousers and sometimes white trousers.
