Duplication, or going with a new style direction?

I actually bought (and returned) this dress late last fall when I was still in FL (1). It was a size too big, but also a tad dressier than I was looking for at the time. Well, now I'm coming back around to it. My question is whether I am saturating my closet with a similar look. I have two newer blouson type dresses (3 & 4) and a romper on the way (2). Is this too much more of the same? Or should I embrace the new style direction and not worry too much about similarities?

This type of style speaks to me as being "Mo-esque" ... perhaps you are more drawn to this style for a reason? Do the pieces in #3 and #4 (which look smashing, btw) get worn a lot? If they do, I don't see anything wrong with adding another piece (very different colour; and no sleeves!)

Lyn*, I am surprised at how much I've worn the two dresses so far, even in Tahoe variable weather. To the detriment of all other dresses languishing in the closet, actually!
I have the ink blue one set aside as my airplane dress next week in fact

OK, first of all, I love this style of dress on you.

Second - obviously, I am not the person to urge you not to duplicate a style of dress that works on you. I wear poly/spandex or jersey blend dresses all the time and they are multiplying in my closet like bunnies. It's a style that works for me. But I'm also learning to love new silhouettes like floaty silk or chiffon blouses and am adding duplicates after realizing how much I love the one that I bought.

Bottom line, I don't think that it's a bad thing to add more when you are getting a ton of wear out of a very flattering style of dress.

I am thinking that if I make the tip money tomorrow to cover it, I will order it. Incentive!!
And perhaps I will do a face off between the romper and blue tank dress.

I say if you are always reaching for this type of thing, then go for it! It's clearly something that works and works well! This one is different from the others, anyway, to my eye - the colour, the neckline....those give it a different feel, yet the simple silhouette remains. You'll look great in it.

The romper is something that can't be dressed up as much as the blue dress (for a wedding for example) but both could work for date nights, etc. So keep both. Both are gorgeous on you and tonally different as well.
If this style is working, look for something slightly different and go with it.

It's a style that suits you and since both the romper and blue dress are sleeveless, they will layer well. I say go for it!

Oh boy, now I'm thinking a striped jersey dress would be a smarter addition than another woven blouson. Sigh. It's a good thing I have a budget to keep me from just ordering willy nilly. Must slow down and think about this more.

If it gets a lot of use, why not get something in a similar style (it's not like it's an exact duplicate, plus it's a different color and sleeveless). The blue dress looks really pretty and I'm sure it would look great on you.

Yeah, I have to think about that 'lot of use'. For me, wearing a dress 3 times a month is a lot of use right now. I have 12 dresses for the move. It should be for 6 months. I can't possibly wear each of them 3X a month - there aren't 36 days in a month!! I will likely wear 3 or 4 of them that often, and the rest maybe once a month or even less.

Again, maybe I should cool my jets for a minute. lol
But . . . I know I would love it and find time to wear it.
Maybe what I *really* need to do is purge the other dresses I'm not loving anymore.

I'm coming at this from the angle that you've been trying to keep a smaller wardrobe than in the past. When you reach for a blousey dress like this, do you experience the feeling that you don't have enough? Either in the I-just-wore-this or the all-the-other-options-are-dirty sense?

The only reason I'm mentioning is because I remember you saying before that you used to want many multiples of everything but that it wasn't necessary. Of course if you're planning a purge of other dresses as well, this may be a moot point. Just playing devil's advocate, I guess.

I think this dress still has a different feel from the other ones you are showing. If you can get it in the right size, I bet it would look fantastic. The slightly blousey effect makes a lot of sense for hot weather.

I'm going to jump on Rae's devil's advocate bandwagon for a moment too. Although I think duplicating to remove bottlenecks is a great idea, is this a true bottleneck? Eg, how many times have you said to yourself "I want to wear a dress just like this today, but can't because ..."?

You say you wear a dress 3x a month currently. Let's say you totally fall in love with the dresses look and TRIPLE that amount to 9x, meaning the blouson dress you're considering goes into rotation 2x a month (9x per month across 4 dresses = 2x for your new one). Is there another item you're considering which would get as much (or more) airtime?

I should clarify again that I would wear *each* blouson dress about 3 X a month, not just *a* dress 3 times a month.
In FL weather, I could get use out of the blue dress. I think it would mean pushing some others aside, and or purging them. Maybe that's what I really need.
Rae, you are right - I do want to limit my similar purchases. That's what makes me think perhaps I should choose between the romper and blue dress.

Argh, so sorry, Mo! I misread your earlier comment about how often you'd wear your dresses. Hopefully my poor math skills didn't derail the conversation too much.

It sounds like you're on the right track by comparing the romper and the blue dress.
