Hi everyone, got a ? for you. When I buy online and use the measuring chart the tops are almost always too big, doesn't matter the brand. I'm a 38H, directly around the fullest part of my chest it is 52-53 inches. Order the closest size to that measurement and it's way too loose. I don't want a 'second skin' look, but I could easily hold it out 6-7 inches! What am I doing wrong?

I’ve experienced this when using chest size. I find that I’ve better success with using waist measurement and then usually going up one size (eg size 6 based on waist, 8 for tops). Especially for items with some stretch. In items without stretch that I want some layering room (eg jackets) I might go up two sizes (eg size 10), but it might need tailoring. I also look for items that come in at waist vs boxy structure.

First off, it’s not you, it’s the tops!

I don’t know why, but…
I would look for/maybe call customer service for garment measurements. They should be a bit bigger than your measurements but once you know that info you can adjust the size you purchase. Over time you will learn how different styles fit in different brands-until they change it lol.

Also, the larger the size the larger difference between sizes, so a glance at the start point for the next size up will give you a better idea of how big the garment will be, as it will be designed to fit everyone up to that size.

Try taking the measurements of a top that you have that you like the fit of, that is in a style similar to what you want to buy ( so measure a sweater if you want to buy a sweater online) and compare those measurements to the item online that you are considering.

It's not you. Generally speaking, clothing is designed for about a B cup chest, so if your chest is larger than that, the measurements will be off.

Yowza that’s harsh on yourself, especially as it isn’t even your fault. BD’s got you covered with the info about sizing. Most size charts give body measurements, not actual garment size. Can you contact customer service for assistance?

Sheryl also offers a good idea to measure the tops you already have. While not all online retailers provide item measurements, it seems most do (or you can also try the brand's own website).

Depending on what the rest of your figure is like, your bust size seems to be skewing you toward larger sizes, and I've found that these sizes are bigger all over - not sized up proportionately for us fuller busted women (I'm 36G). I bought a blouse that I thought would be correctly sized, and it fits like a circus tent. I want the designers to know that just because I have large "girls" the rest of me isn't a 40" diameter cylinder.

You may have to order a couple of sizes until you find what brands makes the best sizes to suit you.
