Im new to buying fashionable shoes and boots and am wondering if the heel height is measured from the back of the heel, or from the side where its slightly lower.....Im hoping its from the back- then I know I can wear 3" heels ok!

Not a dumb question at all and I believe there is no real consensus which leads to very confusing statistics. I believe most websites list the length vertically to the floor rather than along the diagonal.

one thing to account for is the presence of a platform. so if there is a 1/2 inch platform with a 3.5 inch heel, your foot will feel like you're walking on a 3 inch heel.

be cautious tho, because the distance to the floor is still 3.5 inches and the platform can induce a wobble.

if you want to try platform shoes, especially those with a high high heel, look for tapering on the front sole. this allows your foot to "rock" as you lift your heel when walking. increased stability and less clumping around.

edit: these sergio rossi booties are an extreme example used to demo the front sole taper

I always measure at the back of the heel. Seems to always match what the description says.
