Dry shampoo

Can anyone recommend a dry shampoo that won't leave residue in black hair and has no or very mild smell? Does such a thing even exist? Back in the day it was basically just like baby powder and left white powder in my hair, so I gave up. Wondering if it's improved any since the last time I tried (>10 yrs ago) since it would be useful to have.

I'd be interested in this for DD as well. We had some random brand we picked up at Target and promptly threw away--the smell was nauseating (lemon, I think) and it left white residue.

I haven't been able to find one with no smell.

For dark hair, check out the colored ones Louise recommended. I think Oscar Blandi also has a colored one, but beware of rain. I get brown streaks down my face when I wash this one out.

I've read a few tips on using dry shampoos that help with the powder effect. The best one is to apply the dry shampoo at night, before your hair really needs the refreshing. It absorbs the oils while you sleep and the next day your hair is fresher, but the powdery look is gone. The smell is gone by then too.

The other tip is to apply the dry shampoo, let it sit on your hair while you finish getting ready, then massage it in like shampoo until the white is gone. I've even used a towel to rub it out and this helps.

All that said, I've yet to find one that I love, the smell of all of them drives me batty, and no matter what other steps I do, if I don't wash my hair close to daily I get terrible breakouts on my neck and shoulders, so I finally threw in the towel (heh!) and gave up on trying to get by with less hair washing.

I use Tresemme, Diana. It does smell, although it dissipates quickly. I find that if I spray it into my brush I don't get a chalky look. I do have to wash my brush after a few uses, though.

Thanks for the recs and tips, ladies. Louise, the dark hair one looks intriguing. Is the spray/residue actually dark or it is clear? I'm not sure I want to risk staining my clothes/bedding/etc with a dark spray.

The smell thing is problematic. Strong smells bother me, especially when they are on my person because I can't get away from them! I think I might have to go to the drugstore and see if I can sniff them.

I have hair on the dry side, and it is colored, so my stylist recommends I wash it only every 3 days or so to maintain the color and moisture. I don't always make it 3 days, but I try not to wash more than every other day, because it gets too dry. However, by the third day my scalp is sometimes looking a little dodgy.

By the way, I came across a tutorial online that said to use unsweetened cocoa powder! Not sure I have the guts to try that, plus I shudder at the thought of getting cocoa everywhere!

I use SG Salon Grafix (available in drug stores/Target, etc) and it works really well. Kinda stinks for just a minute while you're spraying it, then the smell goes away almost immediately. Works way better (for me) than Pantene's dry shampoo... that stuff left my hair feeling worse.

I do not have a recommendation. I have tried most products that I could find at the drugstore for my DD when she was younger. All of them were nasty and her hair felt worse to me. I wonder if you can find something in the natural product dept?

I use Pssssttt. I don't think that it has a scent. I only spray it on my roots. Then I massage a bit, let sit ( to soak up any oil ) , then I brush really well. It works for me.

Like Rachy, I use Klorane. The smell goes away and, I have dark brown hair and have never noticed a residue. I found it in the drugstore - about $15 and it lasts about 6 weeks at the most. Good luck - I hope you find something!

OK, so as far as i can tell the ones that are specifically made for black/dark hair actually have color in them. I don't think I want to do that as it just seems like it would make a big mess. I could just see myself using it and then wearing a white shirt and getting brown spots all over it!

I will definitely check out some of the non-colored versions though. Glad to hear that my fellow dark-haired ladies have been using them without getting residue.

Diana - what if you tried persevering with the no washing for three days... apparently your hair gets used to it after a bit...?

I only wash my hair every three days or so, but I do try to rinse my hair every day in the shower.

Hill, I've been doing it for years. This is as happy as it will get. My hair doesn't mind at all, but my scalp gets a bit oily.

Ceit, I do that on occasion too, especially after workouts and things, but honestly I feel like it washes the hair better than the scalp (which is opposite of what I want).

I remember being afraid of the B&B black. Tried it with my stylist, got a little one... if I recall the black *did* make a mess.

The only one I've used is the Suave, which works fine for me (gotta shake it up a lot before use) and doesn't leave any residue in my light brown hair, at least. The price is much more reasonable than a lot of the brands, too. Suave also makes a foam dry shampoo which is nice if you want more body or have curly/wavy hair. It takes a couple minutes to dry so it's not completely instant like the spray dry one, but it's a nice alternative.

This is something I need to get on the bandwagon with - not shampooing my hair every single day.

I haven't tried any dry shampoos, so I don't have any good recommendations on that front, but there is a styling product that might work nicely, even though it's marketed as a so-called "second day re-styler". Works beautifully when I use it in the morning and also works extremely well if I need to re-style my hair in the evening for a night out or event.

You might try TIGI /Bedhead brand 'Spoil Me' (a styling spray):

It's not a dry shampoo at all - just that it works nicely for 're-styling' and fluffing up when things have gone downhill.
