Dressing with a Pixie Cut?

OK, now the challenge really begins LOL I can do the hair myself, and I'm really happy with it, but I have realised I do need to tweak my style/dressing habits a bit...

I went to put on a shirt yesterday with shorts, and it looked incredibly masculine... but due to the days activities, accessories weren't an option... so I changed for a lace trimmed top instead. I think I can have the tendency to look masculine quite easily because I look very similar to my brothers as it is, so will definitely need to play up my femininity...

So, for my fellow-pixie-girls, what have you found you need to consider with dressing?

Will I just need to focus on feminine accessories/clothing around my upper body?

My girls are off to their dad's tonight for the weekend, so I'll have some time to experiment, but if you have any tips/ideas/suggestions, I'd love to hear them so I can experiment with some idea!!!

For starters, I'd play up your beautiful eyes with mascara, liner and shadow!

I know what you mean - I've got a pretty curvy body so that helps balance out the vibe, but short hair can look a touch masculine no matter what (not that there's anything wrong with that, but if it's not what you're going for...). I don't do a lot of flannel and jeans kind of looks, and when I wear a button-down I tend to pair it with a skirt or something more feminine, and/or make sure I have appropriate jewelry on.

I have not gotten to pixie style yet so no personal experience here. How about going through Angie's outfit pictures once more and see how she does it with her pixie? Also Laura and Chewy come to mind as other excellent models of this haircut.

LOve to hear what everyone is saying about this as I am working my way through it as well.Kind of late since I have had a pixie on and off for years now, hoo haa!

but anyway, yes it can be tough to ward off the masculine vibe unless you have a body that TOTALLY SCREAMS WOMAN even in a sack, and that is not me. You will come to find out what works best on you, and assuming you DON'T want to embrace the androgeny possibilities(which can be fashionably fun too). I have found a few things work best for me(and my hair is super short, like Halle Berry's crop--one false move and I look like a cadet):

I wear feminine earrings, rarely simple studs.Always dangles, hoops,something interesting around my face.I wear simple studs only if I am wearing a sheath dress to work maybe.
I go for feminine tops(ruffles prints, bows, nice buttons,silks etc and avoid simple button down shirts, unless paired with a skirt.
Heels if possible.
Dresses whenever I can.

I love the gamine haircut, the simplicity and loveliness of it. ONce I did venture out without any earrings and my husband said he loved how it put all the focus on my face and neck, so you never know what may end up working for you on a particular day and with a particular outfit. Enjoy your haircut!

I wore my hair very short for a long time and I think that you need to be aware of including feminine elements. Eye makeup and makeup in general become more important, as do earrings. You'll find what works for you quickly, and congratulations on a stunning new look.

The shorter my hair gets...the more feminine everything else gets. I wear dresses and skirts more than pants...heels...bigger earrings and more accessories all around. I also wear more or darker lips and eyes.I put a discreet but visible headband on almost daily:)

Great advice, everyone. Short hair CAN be challenging. Avoid too tailored or severe looks. Adding feminine details, as most everybody mentions, is the key to softening the entire effect. ALWAYS wear some interesting earrings, which I think are the most important accessory for short-haired gals. And impeccable, natural makeup is a must.

I have short hair and I don't wear earings, I actually hate them on my ears. And I don't think that I look like a man because I don't wear them. I think you look very much like a girl and you don't have to over think this at all, short hair or not.
Do you think I look like a man?
One more thing, I do wear lots of prints as you see on the picture, so maybe this is my secret,lol

No one would think you look like a man Renata because you don't wear earrings!!

Hair is a part of the TOTAL look, so extremely short, boyish hair CAN look masculine as Theresa has mentioned depending on what you wear one can even look butch in a hurry if no ultra femininity is obvious ...it can also look incredibly feminine and dainty...IF there is a feminine vibe going on elsewhere.

But often ladies tell me when I'm cutting their hair ( don't cut my hair too short, I don't want to look like my husband, or boyfriend, man, whatever) I'm sure you have experience this.

All the time.!!! Long hair is associated with femininity...always has. Most women are very attached to their long hair...even years beyond when long hair is attractive, or pretty on them, and all because they don't feel feminine with a short cut...well, yea if you don't dress like a girl ...
As I have always said .~.It is the total look ~ !!!

I tried on once long hair wig, and honestly I thought I looked goofy!
Too many older woman keep long hair for way too long, I agree with you on that one Taylor!

I have a very curvy body, though- no doubt about my sex. I actually like an androgynous look. It works for me.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions! I will spend some time in the morning experimenting with more feminine looks... I'm all for a degree of femininity but I'm a bit of a tomboy at heart, so this is a great time to remember to embrace the woman in me every day rather than just occasionally!!

I'll experiment with and without earrings - by the sounds of it, anything can work!

And Renata, I would never for a minute think you were male!!!! I love that we are hair-twins now

I noticed the distinct difference this morning when getting dressed between before I did my hair/make up, and after - it really was astounding!

I suspect too, that a lot of the issues will simply be me adjusting to such a drastic change in my look - hopefully in a few days/weeks I'll forget this time of transition now!!

Thanks girls for bearing with me at the moment - I'm still utterly in love with my hair, so I'm willing to do whatever it takes!

You'll have fun experimenting! Things that looked better on me with a pixie cut:
- romantic, flowy blouses
- ruffles
- high-collared shirts
- dainty earrings - actually, dainty jewelry in general

I haven't found a single garment that I can't wear because it looks too masculine with a pixie cut, so that doesn't really strike a chord. But it's probably got to do with the raw material you are working with I am curvy and petite and have big eyes so anything that can give me an edge or a masculine angle actually helps my overall style. Are you the same?

I have a pixie cut and when my hair is short I wear bigger earrings and more accessories in general. Keeping eyebrows in check is a good move too. For me these things are important because I don't wear makeup, so I really try to play up the other elements.

Just have fun with it! When I got "pixied" I felt like I suddenly had permission to dress more femininely. I've got an athletic shape - not super curvy at all - and my over all style has always been fairly tailored and I loved (and still do) the military look for years. One might say my style had a masculine vibe.

Before the new do, I often felt like I was in a costume if I wore a skirt or a dress and there was no occasion. However now I feel like I am more able to "get away" with it! It's great! I'll still wear all the old items I loved, but I'm more likely to be certain to wear makeup and now everyone can see my earrings! Yay!

I love your cut and you look so cute in it. You have beautiful blue eyes and now they will be strongly highlighted. No boyishness at all!

While I agree with most of what's been said, I have to say that its your attitude with a short pixie cut that makes it work

For the record, I often wear strict military clothing and don't wear eye make-up (other than mascara), nor do I ever wear earrings! But I am a lipstick and pearls girl which I guess makes up for it.

I had a pixie cut for years and absolutely loved it. And while the haircut itself is very easy to style, I always found I had a lot less wiggle room with my wardrobe and makeup. It's as if I felt I had to make up for the haircut's androgyny with always a little makeup and fabulous big earrings. I think as long as you attend to maintaining a high level of polish, you needn't worry about dressing in a way that is especially feminine, or moreso than you're used to.

That said, a girl with short short hair, big earrings and a flirty little dress? Absolutely KILLER!

I have a different perspective on the pixie thing. Actually I'm going through a phase now where I've been tempted to push it more towards the masculine (since I got my short cut). I know I'll always look feminine because of my face and my curvy lower half, and how I feel inside.

I'm basically wearing the same things, and struggle with the same style issues no matter my hair length.

Hmm, on the other hand, maybe I'll start wearing more earrings again. Yes, I realize I just said that I wanted to experiment with more masculine looks. I'm a very moody dresser

The good thing is that you can wear bolder make up (either on the eyes or on the lips) and more feminine clothes, don't go with too casual jeans and t-shirt and no make up because you would look like a boy.
No big earring but bold necklaces and bracelets!

I didn't notice a terrible difference in whether I could dress masculine or feminine as regardless of how I dress, I will still look female due to my hourglass shape.

That being said, I also adopt androgynous and masculine styles, and style my hair in an edgy manner that day to complement the look. I don't feel too boy-ish because it is the look I'm going for, but the reason that this might work is because these looks are smart casual or business casual, and I'm guessing that if I were to wear more casual tshirts, baggy jeans and Cons, I would feel very differently about the look.

Thanks for all the replies ladies - I knew you'd be a wealth of information!

I played around briefly today and have definitely found a few looks I absolutely adore. And some not so much... but they were looks I was never quite happy with before either, so I'm not surprised!

I did however discover that simply adding lip gloss (my fave red shade), instantly helped. Also, I discovered that the looks that I found a bit "too" girly before, now are perfect!

Perhaps I'm just a bit paranoid about this because so many people tell me I look like my brothers already LOL And of course because casual is my main dress code - I think it can be easy to forget the "polish" that instantly helps.

But, I am now jumping up and down with glee because I no longer feel like wearing my fave lip gloss is *too overdressed* for my day to day life!

And, I still ABSOLUTELY LOVE my new 'do!

Theresa, I have no advice on haircuts but I wanted to chime in late and say how much I love your new do! Your pretty, delicate face was MADE for short hair.

Personally I love super cropped hair with mod Twiggy-esque looks...but then again I love everything with mod Twiggy-esque looks...

Your denim dress that Angie and I were fighting over is going to look AMAZING with this cut!
