Dress shirt button flap

I bought a Kenneth Cole reaction dress shirt online, because I had previously purchased a few shirts and liked them and wanted some different colors. However, the shirt I got has a different pattern going down the buttons ending in a weird flap three buttons up from the bottom. What is this!!

I have a few shirts like this. I think it is to make it smoother for the part that tucks into your trousers so the buttons don't interfere with the waistband of the trousers.

Hhhmm maybe, the only thing I could think off is that you would button the flap in between your pants button to keep the shirt flat but the button is a half inch above my waistline... I mean third button from the bottom is pretty high up.

Is it anything you see on this page? The fly front is what I was thinking of when you said flap.

No that's not it, this is an extra piece of fabric sewn down the buttons that almost looks like a skinny tie that buttons into the shirt. And the very end is a half inch flap over the button that can be unbuttoned separately from the shirt and just hangs there...

Here is a terrible picture of it but I think it's good enough to see what I'm talking about this is the flap unbuttoned but you can see the button hole.

I think it is just a design element. It looks kind of like it is imitating a stiff front dress shirt with a tab on the placket. Like this shirt:
