So, on a whim, I stopped into F21 (my second time ever) and found this sundress:

I was thinking that it might look cute with a cardigan over it and some grey leggings under it. Or maybe even a knit top under it...

Once I got it home, I realized,

a) I don't have a cardigan to put over it
b) I don't own leggings, let alone grey leggings, and am not even sure I can pull them off anyhow
c) I'm probably living in a fantasy world to even think this dress will work
d) I'm the same age as most of the mothers who shop at F21 with TEEN daughters and I should probably avoid that place like the plague

and lastly,

e) F21 has a lame return policy (store credit only)

I tried putting a knit top under it, and I'm worried I look like I'm trying too hard to look young. Then I put some boot cut jeans under it and thought maybe it didn't look so bad after all.

I can just see myself wearing this out to a movie with some girlfriends and then suddenly looking down and feeling foolish.

I can't seem to find that line between age appropriate and fresh and funky.

Any ideas?

Smiling about the looks you had put together in your head, and then realizing you don't have the items to pull it off;-)

It's a lovely dress and I do think it can work (do post a picture of you wearing it if you can, you'll get more specific suggestions that way). I'm imagining it with either a cardi over it or a cute denim jacket or (p)leather jacket. Could you see yourself wearing it that way?

Try it over boot cut jeans with boots and a hot pink cardigan. I realize you don't have cardigans, but it may be something worth investing in. Even just one or two in fun, bright colors.
A denim jacket (like the Levis one in the YLF store) would be PERFECT over this dress, too. If it's too short, try a pair of just under the knee leggings (my favorite length) in grey.
But post pictures first. You obviously love the dress, and I know we'd all love to see you find a way to wear it.

I like Sarah's denim jacket idea....can you wait and bring it out this spring/summer when white and colorful leggings are everywhere?

I like the denim jacket idea, too. I would try it with skinny jeans as well. Or just vacation someplace very warm, and wear it with sandals and a wide-brim hat!

It's a great dress! I don't know how short it is on you, but Angie had a MOTG last summer that involved a summer dress and a jacket of some sort - sorry but I'm not able to search right now for it. (I hope they decide to put formulas together somewhere!)

You could put those cropped leggings under it - the ones that go just below your knee but above your calf (is that length capri?)

It's a beautiful dress with a pattern and style that seems really quite common on everyone in the summer, when those colors and styles are everywhere, as Taylor said.
You've got modesty covered with leggings or jeans on bottom, and a jacket on top. I suppose you are more worried about how common this dress will be on a young crowd everywhere this summer, and the way the ultra young crowd will be wearing it. I guess what this narrows down to for all of us is that if you buy an item where your friends kids, or grandkids shop, you're likely to see it on them and feel a bit embarrassed.
