Dr Martens - leather variations?

I wanted to try a smaller size in 20 eye docs and ordered a pair from Endless. They arrived today, and while the smaller size is not going to work, I was a little puzzled, because the leather looked very different from the other (bigger size) pair I got from Zappos. It's more shiny and also a lot stiffer and uncomfortable. The Zappos pair is very soft. I am sending back the Endless pair, but I was just curious why it is so different. Is the stiff leather more "real"? Should I order a stiff pair from Endless in bigger size? I'd love to hear your experience and/or thoughts.

Marianne, I did a little research on DMs and there are two black colors-- black and black illusion. The black ones (endless) are the original style so maybe the black illusion are the softer leather? The cherry ones I tried were also the original style and a stiffer leather. Inge's silver ones are the softer leather. Having felt both leathers now, I much prefer the softer feel. Check the color on your docs and see if they are black illusion. Otherwise that is very strange indeed.

Thank you Patience, you are correct. Well done research! I just checked the Zappos box and the color is indeed "Black illusion". It was listed as "black" on the site when I bought it. I definitely prefer the softer leather - they are very comfortable and supple. I hope it performs as well in our weather.

I also saw the silver docs at the store, and they were very similar, however, the only other ones the had were patent, that's why it was a bit of a surprise for me.

Hmm, now I'm reconsidering my red ones and thinking about ordering the softer silver ones. So the silver ones (that Tanya has and Inge was going to get) are softer, right? I think I'll try them out just in case the different leather fits my foot better.

The black ones are quite confusing. There's at least three versions floating around. And I found another one at Endless, they call it original black smooth http://www.endless.com/Dr-Mart.....%20Martens

Lena, those are the ones with no zipper, and I think they are so not made for women specifically, and it could be a different fit. I was also confused by the black color variations between different sellers. I am sure silver docs will work for you, even though I am so used to picturing you in the red ones in my head

I returned the Endless pair and wore the black illusion docs for the first time outside the house today!
