Dr. Martens - for beginners!

I like the tough girl look of Dr. Martens and think they would compliment my style. I am thinking about buying either the 1460, 8-eyelet or the 1490, 10-eyelet, in black. Any advice from experienced Doc fans? I typically wear an 8 AA and have narrow heels and high arches.

I tend to like the taller ones - 14 or 20 holes, personally, but I think it also depends on your height. So.. How tall are you? (I lean toward the 10 holes here.)

I love Docs but have not had a 'classic' pair in years. I have 3 pairs currently in rotation: monk buckle shoes, 8 hole Dana boots and some Elena midcalf boots. All three are very comfy and I adore them.

Hey RT! I am 5'8" and am currently drooling over all the Doc offerings on Zappos, specifically the Serena. There's a fabulous shoe outlet VERY close by, so I'll probably check out which Docs they have in stock. I've got some Christmas money to spend!

Yay! Try them on locally and see what you like. You might consider checking 6pm also, as they seem to have some great prices on Docs right now.

I am an original Docs die-hard as you know, Barbara. They take a while to break in - and then they are a dream on your feet. You will have them for life - the most robust shoe on earth.

They are worth every penny. I have a pair of grey 20 holes. I'm 5' 7" and needed the lace up ones to reign in the gap at the top. I take a UK 6.5 so got the UK 7. Having the extra half size has meant very little breaking in and the they are 8 + hour boots for me. I wear them with 2 pairs of thin socks for warmth and comfort and have an insole in them ahhhh bliss I shall be wearing them today x

ETA make sure you use leather protector to keep them looking good x

Louise, I am willing to try ALL the Docs I can, including the tall ones. Thanks for the sizing advice. I wear an 8, so I will probably size up.

Barbara, if you wear a 8 in U.S. sizes, be aware that you will probably need a 6 UK. I wear a U.S. 9-9.5 and a 7 in Docs. Also, Docs (especially the unisex styles) tend to run wide.

Barbara, I noticed that you wear a narrow size. If width is important to you, I highly suggest trying a pair on before you buy, as Docs are too wide for my feet, and I don't recall seeing narrow sizes.

Alas, my trip to the shoe outlet was for naught - no Docs anywhere near my size. But there is more than one outlet near me: Plan B!

Rae, I do have very narrow feet, so trying them on was my goal today. I may order them from Zappos in a style or two. I'm loving the tall ones Louise mentioned.
