What Isabel said. Even in Canada, I've begun to shop at Nordstrom's, for precisely that reason. Incredible selection and brilliant customer service. I go across the border to do it!
My Canadian recs wouldn't help you much, I fear. And I also think body type/ job plays a huge role here -- what works well for one won't for another.
But, in case it helps -- some of my personal favourite brands/ items:
Jeans -- True Religion Cameron 100% cotton BF jean; Citizens of Humanity "Racer" skinny (sized up one -- it fits a bit small on the thighs), BR cream jeans that Angie recommended, and Kut from the Kloth for lower priced but still really high quality jeans. Not all their styles work, but those that do are excellent value.
Jackets: I get a surprisingly good fit from Zara right off the rack and the quality for the price is also amazingly good. It's definitely fast fashion -- to try a look or trend -- but wow, how nice when it works.
Nicole Miller and David Meister for sheath dresses.
Stuart Weitzman and la Canadienne for footwear -- pricey, but worth it. Also, Sam Edelman -- I really like the styles and the comfort level is also generally good for me.
Theory for lots of stuff, although right now I am struggling with the cuts of the new pants, and also trying to get a jacket to work for me...so I may have lost my dream.
I get a lot of stuff at Banana Republic because we have free delivery and returns here and the price is right. This year their fluid knits were pretty good quality. I know how I fit their stuff, so that helps.
J. Crew for knitwear and linen tees in summer.
Vince Camuto for the tube skirts and some other items.
