Sleepers are what we call small plain hoops in Canada, too.
Wendy, I think RoseandJoan is right -- multiple ear piercings are an ageless look. Double piercing was a trendy thing to do in the 80s, and now so many middle-aged women still have "extra" ear piercings that it has become mainstream. As shaz mentions, younger people are more likely to experiment with "fringe" piercing fashions, like lips, cheek, body etc.
I'm a middle-aged woman, and I have five deliberately unevenly spaced ear piercings. I have had more than that, because in the 90s getting more piercings was de rigeur, but many have grown closed. I wear small fat white gold sleepers in them 97% of the time, and never think twice about them. They are just part of my body -- even more than my wedding rings, which I remove every night! (The reason being, I think, that I use my hands a lot, and like them ring-free as much as possible while they are in use. Earlobes don't do much).
Aida, it would heal. I got a third hole punched in my right ear when I was forty. I had two in each ear that were deliberately unevenly spaced, but it had always bugged me that they didn't look uneven enough, because I'd accidentally let a third piercing in my left ear go closed in my late twenties. So I got another hole punched on a whim one day while passing the shop.
