Terry Gross interviewed Donna Karan today on ther radio show. Donna Karan has an autobiography that's just been published. I'd forgotten she was at Anne Klein. Made me think how much her leaving changed that line. I used to love DKNY; I mourn still my knit leggings and swing sweater that the moths got to. It was so Jetsons...

She was/is one of the big reasons I went into clothing & textiles in university. I found her story fascinating, and loved her versions of working wear for the modern woman. I am making myself sound 100 years old - ha. Anyways, my senior year tailoring project was a Donna Karan suit . Can't wait for the book to be released here.

She has always described herself as visceral, sensual, and I have always liked the sumptuous yet Spartan aspect of her ensembles.., but I have to say I never understood the body suit. That's a difficult item.

You either have to undress completely when nature calls or snap wrangle... All of which means, like, 30 minutes in the ladies lounge...

I heard part of this interview also and really enjoyed it. I was just wowed by how she built her business and how much work goes into a "collection" year after year.

I don't , sadly. I was her iconic wrap skirt, with a collarless. drapey cocoon-ish (if I remember correctly) big-shouldered lined jacket (don't laugh, this was the early 80's) I blew the wad of my saved-up -student cash and bought the most expensive black wool crepe I could find. It was a beautiful suit and I wish I had kept it - although I weighed about 115 lbs at the time and it would be entirely too depressing to see. I'm not very sentimental that way - out of style and doesn't fit? Gone.

I did like the bodysuits (though to be sure, they were tricky to do up). Made me feel like a ballerina.
Also we always tucked everything anyway, and they made tucking easier.

There's an interview with Donna Karan in InStyle right now. She comments about women buying individual items being the way of things, as opposed to buying collections in times of yore. I feel this is sorta true... I really appreciate the way she boiled things down to a body suit, trousers, leggings, dress, scarf...

rachylou, I also have the dream of walking up to a "grouping" of items by one maker or designer and find the 7 Easy Pieces that fit and color- coordinate but don't look too much like a TravelSmith ad.

I actually remember a few times (in the previous millenium) when I was buying Jones New York or Austin Reed and would luck into some matching pieces.
But is nigh impossible for me to ever have one of those capsules of jacket, skirt, 2 types of pants etc. in the same suiting fabric.
