Does this work as a denim jacket?

I've had it forever. It was part of a set...a long, sleeveless denim dress went underneath but that is long gone.

It isn't current and sort of looks more like a big shirt than a jacket. But, is it acceptable or should I look for one more current and jacket-ish?

I think it works over skinny pants, or maybe a pencil skirt. I also think a more current, as in a classic denim jacket, probably would be more versatile for you.

This looks much cuter on than on the hanger. I like it. I have poison eye for denim jackets, so I say wear this until you find a really really really really good one.

I'm another one who doesn't care much for denim jackets so you'll take what I say with a grain of salt: I love the soft crushable look on you. If I were *going* to wear a denim jacket, then I like this one.

Well. I don't know if my judgement can be trusted here.

I DO like denim jackets. Or at least some denim jackets. (I own 3 -- one faded denim, one dark wash with leather sleeves, and one white.)

This doesn't look like a classic denim jacket. But it does look good on you, and I like it. A lot! I think it's more on the "arty eclectic" side which makes it hard to date.

Hmm. I'm biased because I DO like denim jackets (high five, Suz), and I'm not getting a current vibe from this one. But I have a very low tolerance for anything that might verge on Chicos territory (no offense to Chicos or its fans), and I'm getting a bit of that feeling from this. It's a combination of the wash and the cut, I think.

Well, we are divided! Me too. I've never worn it much. But...Soft and Arty were two of my style descriptors from last week's post on the subject. Also Easy...and it would be easy to not have to look for another one! In fact, I probably wouldn't since I need other things more.

I don't think it fits the "denim jacket hole" (if there is such a thing). It is cut differently, it falls differently, and it gives off a different vibe.

We don't have Chicos here, so the references to that place always fly by me a bit.

What I get from this is MAYBE "thrift store find" but also: artist's smock. Bill Cunningham. China, 1950. Which in my books makes it a sort of fun piece -- especially given your style descriptor/ persona. You are not going for rock-'n-roll. You are going for something different.

I'm getting the same vibe as Suz, kind of classic crafty/arty. The color, length and boxiness look good to me on you. Have you tried rolling or turning up the sleeves various ways?

Ok, I don't wear or like denim jacket for me BUT there is something about his like and I would suggest styling could make or break this. Anna has a very keen eye for what is current and cutting edge and I would be interested for her to pop buy and share her thoughts.

I don't want to offend you, but to me, it looks like what Michelle Duggar might wear, with a long skirt and sensible shoes. That's the vibe I get from it.

ETA: I'm sorry that was so harsh, but you deserve to wear something cooler.

Hmm. It is kind of like a "cropped" shirt.

What happens if you wear a long, lighter, floaty layer underneath, I wonder?

So I definitely see "shirt" and not "jacket". As for styling, it might work in a hip to be square way, but you'd have to be VERY deliberate about it. To be honest I don't really see you doing hip to be square anyway, so I'd probably pass it on.

Wow, lots of different feeling about this one! And I have the same ones, which I suppose is why I'm not really wearing it.

Deborah, Suz and Rabbit...I always doubt my ability to style something so I'm not sure I could pull off what it will take to make it look cool. I'll look around, but I don't think I actually have anything light and floaty!

JAileen...no offense taken! I'm not sure who that is, but it doesn't sound like I want to look like her. Although, I really can't help joining her in the sensible shoes!

Mmm, I think it has frumpy potential. I don't think it stands in for a current denim jacket, but if its not trying to substitute for something else, it's cute on you. It reminds me of J Jill which is not good or bad, just a specific vibe.

Like Suz said, it looks like it could be worn as a cropped boxy buttondown shirt if buttoned up. I could see it looking swingy that way over black pants or jeans, slim or bootcut, with a black long tank or tee underneath...or not if you want to shoe a little midriff skin between the shirt and waistband.

JAileen made me crack up, I guess you need to know the Duggar clan to get the reference. I agree with the camp that says it is a bit dated. I think you can do better. My first reaction was that it reads more like a shirt than an actual denim jacket.

Yeah, it's not a stand-in for a denim jacket. But if I were to alter it, I'd make the sleeves narrower, roll them, and crop the whole thing under the third button.

I'm cracking up because I have a denim 'ish "safari" style jacket from Chicos several years ago that I still wear in summer primarily because it's the perfect light weight topper and looks pretty good with tan shorts. I never expect to get compliments on it, but I'm afraid I have. That said, I do understand the Chicos "vibe" if you will. Mine is a long jacket, more fitted, defined waist, epaulets on shoulders, etc. This one seems too boxy and maybe just too plain and too mid-tone - not faded, not dark denim. I think I'd pass it on.

Hmmm... I agree that it could be styled in a way that "works," but that it's overall impression is less than modern. If you need lightweight toppers, it could stay until you have no need of it, but I wouldn't buy anything to go with it, if that makes sense.

Well, I like it in an arty way like Suz says. I do think it drapes well on you. Not everyone could pull off a boxier jacket but it does look good on you.
