Does this shirt work layered?

Got this metallic leather tee a while back and would love to layer it for fall/winter. (It's actually leather in front and a thick stretchy knit in back) I tried a few tops underneath and I like the simplest the best. I'm pretty sure I'll wear it out today (have a camera club thing to attend) but thought I'd get opinions. What say you?

Keeping it simple with straight leg jeans and grey booties. No makeup or jewelry yet.

It looks great ! I have also seen such leather tops shown layered over simple thin turtlenecks.

Claire, the top is grey. I'll wear some kind of jacket while I'm outdoors too -- I'm figuring that out now. I might walk from my studio to the meeting, which means a few miles of walking so I will need to be comfy! Not too warm but not cold...

IMO the layering does work... but I still don't like it.

The long white sleeves under a short-sleeved top reminds me of high school in the 90s, wth grungy types layering white fitted tees under band T-shirts in black. I know you are wearing a button-down, I can see the collar, but I still can't shake the high school feeling. I am sorry!

If are you looking for a casual daytime sparkle, please, by all means, ignore my rambling!

Part of me wants to see shirt tails sticking out. Or a plain long-sleeved white tee, no collar, slightly longer than the tshirt. That would be very casual though.

Janet - I too think the underdog needs to be simpler, like turtle neck or long sleeved tee and in either the same depth of colour or tonal as the top. i.e. not too much contrast. I think that would make the textures on the top, the feature, if you like rather than hiding them, a bit with other lines of the shirt.

I did a similar layering experiment yesterday with a knit-buttondown. I felt it was fine. So is this one. I like the grey overall and the way it's bookended with your boots.

Janet, we're close in age...do you remember as kids doing this layering thing constantly? Some kind of short-sleeved knit over a longer top. It brings me back to my 70's childhood, anyway. Just need to pop a poncho on top of it all

Oh wow - I love that top! So very cool. I'm not sure about layering it over the shirt. It does remind me of both the 70's and the 90's - and you can see the bumps and folds of the undershirt/blouse through the top - that kind of bugs me. I saw somewhere (maybe on pinterest?) where they showed a tank top worn over the shirt (to smooth out the shirt) and then the over-top (is that a word?) worn over the tank and it was nice and smooth - no bumps or wrinkles. Anyway - very cool shirt! Also - I love your booties! What are they are?

I'm not mad at it... but I don't know if I love it. Maybe try a silky top instead of the crisp button front? Kind of that play on textures thing?

I'm not sure. I think it's not fitted enough. Did you see the peplum layering post I shared? I think that kind of fit is better, although I can't pull it off.
