I've got a bit of a thing for cameo necklaces at the moment. I've got a tiny one but wanted something a bit more statementy so bought this from Topshop http://www.topshop.com/webapp/.....tegory_rn= with the intention of removing the other 2 chains and just keeping the cameo, however now it's here i can't decide whether i like it as is or whether it looks a bit chavvy like i'm wearing 3 chains?

That's a tough call Louise but I think the cameo on it's own would be more versatile.

For the non UKer's here wikipedias take on the word chav (chavvy)

Hehehe thanks for the link i deleted the passage where i was trying to describe a chav!
Edit for the non UKers stereotypically chavs wear rings on every finger and lots of chains hence the possible comparison!! x

that sounds like what we call a ganster (or my son would say gangstah) or my kids might refer to them as 'wannabes"

you know Louise, I have to say I'm not crazy about the neckace. I looked at it before I read your comments and I thought you had 3 necklaces on. They all seem to distract from eachother.

That *is* a tough call! I don't mind all three chains, but it may look more elegant with just the one cameo.

I was wondering what chavvy meant and it was good of you to explan right up front.
I like all the necklaces together, but they would be nice apart too.
I guess I wouldn't really put on all three of the necklaces at one time myself. If you bought the necklace with your eye on the one cameo, you should probably follow your instinct and wear just the one at a time.
I also have a thing for cameos. Have you looked on Ebay for them Louise? I ended up with a small collection, starting with when I met Ana, Sarah, and Patience in Texas for tea and lunch, and a little shopping. I bought my first cameo there, then I was hooked and I bought several more on Ebay.
Actually my first cameo was a beautiful cameo button sewn onto a school dance dress for me in high school. I still have it in my jewelry box.
I will take a picture of my collection for you other cameo lovers.

Yes i got a small one from ebay, i spent most of last sunday afternoon trawling ebay!! I spotted it while looking for turquoise jewellery and it bacame a bit of an obsession!!!

Louise, I have no idea what "naffy" means, but if it translates into FABULOUSITY, I soooo agree. I love this look. I don't think that I have ever seen it. I may try it myself.

Naff means rubbish, silly, etc part of me loves it with all the chains part of me thinks i should stick with my original idea and take the 2 chains off and just keep the cameo x

I like the picture from the store. I didn't notice the bird and thought the smallest strand was a chain only. With all three pendants it seems a bit busy.

I do like all three together, but I think the cameo by itself would be pretty spiffy. I think you could probably remove the other two and make them all wearable separately (you'd probably need to drop into a craft store and grab a couple of lobster claws, some jump rings and a little extra chain to make clasps for the two "new" necklaces, but it'd be pretty easy to do) and then you could still wear them all together sometimes, too.

I think it's really pretty, especially against a fairly simple shirt like you're wearing it. It's delicate and the chains match, so I think it works. It would be very nice with just the cameo also though.

I think I like the cameo by itself best, but it doesn't look terrible with the three chains.

When I saw the illustration on the wikipedia entry for "chav" it reminded me of what we used to call "Massholes" when I lived in Boston. (Contraction of Massachusetts + asshole, for the non-US YLFers.)

Louise I'm late to the party, but I really like the look of this from far away. From close up it does look a bit....I dunno "chavvy" hehe love the new word, but who ever looks at things that closely except you. I say keep!!!!

LOL Louise! I love learning slang from other countries! I'm going to spring the words on my kids, and then look at them like they are daft when they don't understand what I'm saying! Your necklace is so unique! Can you wear the cameo both ways depending on what mood you are in? My DD has a cameo that she wears by itself. Here's hers:

I don't think there really is a US equivalent of chavs, just like there is no UK equivalent of hillbillies/rednecks...

That said, I don't think I can judge whether or not it looks chavvy, as I am not familiar with that realm...but I sort of feel like the cameo doesn't fit with the other two. I like the little airplane and the other charm on one necklace as they seem more cohesive, but the cameo just seems like a different necklace all together.

so I described "chav" to my son and asked what our term is and he said...."Well, it really depends on alot of factors... race for one, and how low they wear their pants" LOL Apparently labeling kids is a science here.

Isn't Ebay great? It's my first port of call for practically everthing! I've trawled the shops looking for a turquoise and white necklace and found both on ebay for 1/2 the price of the shop ones and they are both unique i love the thought no one else will have one the same x

I like it, Louise, but I would take the top two chains off the necklace and perhaps make a separate chain from the heart and bird chains.

We Irish have an equivalent for chavs- they are often called 'scobes', 'knackers', 'shams' or 'skangers' (depending on what part of Ireland you are from). Isn't the English language and its variations and evolution so interesting?
