As I'm searching for something (right now, a replacement trench coat), I'll be scrolling through at Nordstrom or wherever, and every single thing my eye is drawn to is SO far out of my price range. It's like "Oh, that's nice - oops, Burberry. Hmm, that could work - nope, Prada."

I need to start filtering by price, so I don't even SEE that stuff.

No, but that's because I don't shop online and I only enter shops which sell within my budget possibilities

Most definitely. The most dangerous part for me is that after seeing so many "perfect" options for $800, it makes the options in the $300 range seem soooo reasonable, even if that's still a little too much to spend.

eh eh all the time! When I'm at the store I love to see designer pieces, I can see the piece, touch the fabric, then when I try to find something within my price range, I don't like, the cut is bad, the fabric is not so soft..

I love Angie's solution, but it works best if you already have at least SOMEthing in your closet. Sigh...

Yes! My husband jokes that I can always choose the most expensive item on a page. I am good with any category, too, clothing, furniture, firearms... It's almost a neat parlor trick! Burberry gets me every time.

Me too Cobaltblue! It's like the Sesame Street song, "Which 3 things belong together? Which one thing just doesn't belong?"--the expensive one, I can pick it every time.

I am not much of a car person, but on the way to the airport with my husband the other day I saw a sedan with very attractive lines and a rich, distinctive color. I said, "Look at that nice car! Get closer so I can see what kind it it!" --It was a Maseratti.

Yep, and Beth is so right that after a while your price limit begins to get skewed!! In my endless ankle boot searches I'm finding some Rag and Bone, Ralph Lauren and other $500+ options catch my eye right away! I can only afford 1/4 of that - yikes!

My solution is to be super patient and eventually it will filter down to more accessible prices and brands.

I have what my mom calls "expensive taste". In any store, the option that I find most attractive is always the one with the highest price tag.

Hm. No... but then I shop pretty much exclusively by brand and if I don't see it in a price I can afford, I discount it. And then I look for it used.

i was at a street fair (art & wine type thing in a rural area) around a month ago. i spotted a nice pair of pearl earrings, just studs, but a nice color, size, etc. the only thing i'd seen all day i'd consider actually buying.

$16,000 tahitian pearls. sadly even Angie's strategy won't work at those prices! but it does make shopping pretty discouraging at times, and i'm not much of a shopper to begin with. steph

Yes, it happens all the time! And with me being on a student budget MANY things are too expensive. When I search for something I always set myself a limit beforehand and I'm only allowed to exceed this limit in a narrow margin at the end of the month when I have some money left and know I won't go hungry when I buy it.

Yes, even when I'm trying NOT to. I'll pick what looks "plain" to me, say, in boots or bags, but nice.

Without failure it's the most expensive because it's well made and quality material. :-/

Here I go again - ebay!

I LOVE Costume National boots and there is no way in god's green I can afford a pair new. So I shop for them used and have been very happy! For the used paris, I get them, clean them outside and in (inside, just use a fungal spray and/or swab out with white vinegar or rubbing alcohol, if you're worried about those things), and wear 'em to death. And if I find them new from deadstock etc., I do a happy dance!

Yep, all the time. My husband's taste is even more expensive than mine, but with how picky he is it's usually cost effective for him to just get that perfect, expensive item. Otherwise he just goes without (and one simply cannot go around pantless, as much as he'd like to ). I am just starting to get into the buy less but better quality, so it's starting to happen more and more ><

Yes!!!! And, once you've purchased a few things that are really high-quality and immaculately made, it's hard to go back, I think. For example, I just got this blouse from the RACK. It's Elizabeth and James and retails for $275 (I paid around $80). It is the most luxurious silk--the drape is just beautiful and it's a charmeuse on the inside--and I've worn it all day and it barely wrinkles! It's got a unique beautiful pattern, the fit is somehow slouchy yet streamlined.... It's so hard to go back after that sort of dreamy experience, you know :)? I think that's why I'm so addicted to the RACK online.

I know it sounds cheesy....but seriously, you could go to some high end consignment shops, if you're not in a hurry....and find great stuff....coats just coming in now. Try it!
