Does this belt work?

I thrifted this trench which I wear undone. The original belt was not with the trench when I bought it. I found this belt and wondered if it works with the trench. Why do I have this desire to button and belt things up?

Could you try sitting the belt a little higher? Above your natural waist? I think what's putting me off is that the belt is sitting on the buttons of the coat and it looks a little busy to my eye.

I'm not fond of that belt with the trench coat. It looks a little off. Perhaps a plain black belt instead?

If you tend to wear the trench unbuttoned would you really wear a belt? I get the desire to belt and button- it's a finished look. I like Angie's idea of black if you were to try belting. Honestly this type of a belt doesn't lend itself to undoing and just hanging there like a cloth one. How would you handle where to put the belt when you get hot or take the coat off?

Not a huge fan of this belt here; looks best suited to pants or perhaps a dress. I have been wearing my trenches buttoned and skipping the belt these days. I like the idea of a softer belt over your trench, both in color and fabrication.

Fashion is so subjective. I would actually a like a black wide belt with texture in it. I could see the same belt with a black color.

Some good ideas. I wont wear the belt with the trench. I think I need to wear unbuttoned and look out for a black belt or perhaps a trench with a belt. Thanks.

If you're wanting a little more shape at the waist of the jacket, could you use another fabric tie to tie it through the back belt loops, iykwim? Something black?

I also don't think this belt works with the trench. I would try an unstructured black piece of leather, basically a tie-belt, I think it would look good with the black buttons.

I have a trench similar to this that came with a matching material belt. I did not like the belt in the front so I cut it off and put black buttons to sew it in place in the back of the jacket. So it pulls it in a bit... but leaves the front straight- just wide open glorious red.

I wanted to cut off the belt loops and just use it straight without the belt but it does look a bit more form fitted with the belt in place in the back of the jacket.

I LOVE red trenches ! The best !

I would try a wide black ribbon or fabric belt. Like a bow on a present...

I agree with Alaska girl. Try a piece of black ribbon, nothing shiny, Maybe grosgrain in a 1.5 to 2 inch width?

Agreed on not being a fan of the belt. For me, its the buckle. Maybe try one with a buckle the same width as the belt itself?

I like your idea Sheila. you pinpointed the problem I have with it open. It doesn't hang straight so your button idea is really good. I might see if I can get it sewn for me.

Thanks Una, Tanya, Helen, Ledonna, Ivy and Anna. I think a black belt would work too. Its just finding the right one which looks like it belongs with the coat if you know what I mean.
