Does anyone wear shawls? Thinking of trying the look...

I absolutely ADORE this polyvore outfit, down to the handbag, and am startled to note that not only does in feature a shawl, it's a shawl with FRINGE - and I still like it!!! I had largely written shawls off as dated or too arty for my look. (Like much in fashion, I am starting to realize it's more a matter of considering the particular item in question and how it's styled, rather than "all" shawls are dated or "all" shawls are too arty for me.)

I was thinking of trying this look using this shawl from Nordstrom's:

I'm tempted to try the charcoal/light gray version (most versatile?) but the grape/magenta and blue/mallard versions are also calling to me.

Which color do you think I ought to try? (Assuming you are pro-shawl!)

Calling it a shawl makes me think of Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. I love a nice wrap! And the purple caught my eye for sure.

I love shawls too. They are classic, they don't date. My first WIW (and only so far) I was wearing a top with an attached shawl and the reception on YLF was very positive. It was a special occasion outfit, but a shawl drapes beautifully whether you are wearing it casually or formally.

I was just thinking about my next sewing project, making a hot weather top with an attached shawl, that could drape around my shoulders or fly free behind me. Who knows whether I'll follow through, but the point is shawls are lovely!

The polyvore outfit looks very modern and chic. I think the amount of fabric would overwhelm my small frame, but I would love to see how you style it! I like the purple one but the gray one would be more neutral.

MPJ, the way they have that shawl wrapped, it almost seems like the shape you want is more of a cape or poncho?

I'm wondering how hard it would be to keep that artful draping/wrapping in place with a true shawl.

ETA: For example, in case you didn't see this link on another thread, take a look at this Bobeau piece and click on the Heather Night Shade color to see what it looks like closed: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bo.....tback=1594 The sleeves and button would help it to stay in that "shawlish" configuration without having to constantly fling it back over your shoulder.

I like the way they have done that one on Polyvore, too. My aunt gave me a black shawl in a very similar design that I have yet to wear -- I can never figure out how to drape it in the right way. Maybe safety pins?

I love them. And cannot pic a color as the two you like are both stunning. I don't find them hard to style, just wrap and pop on an across body bag and of you go (bag helps keep everything in place.

In fact, I was even inspired to dust off the old Polyvore account and try to come up with an idea for wearing it with some stuff I already have. What do you think?

april, i've done the fling. i have a couple of small decorative pins that i prefer to use to tack down the over the shoulder part.

I really like the look of the shawl but would also worry about too much fabric and having to fuss with placement.

I love shawls. I have an old one that I picked up from a yard sale, can't wait to wear it again this year!

I like the grey, followed by the teal. My cousin wears shawls without looking like a frazzled hippy. She ends up looking like Natalie Portman.
