Does anyone know the best way to apply mineral powder make-up?

Hello ladies.

I don't usually wear a lot (or any) make-up, but I want some for a more polished look. Think I finally found a mineral make-up that works: it goes on fairly light but covers well (have some red patchiness). I like the smallness of the compact as well (I like a compact compact -- ha ha). My only concern is that my pores are still very visible, and maybe a bit more noticeable with the make-up. I use a collapsable kabuki brush to put it on, and go around in circles as was recommended by a make-up artist. But I want to know if there's a trick to making my pores less visible?

Hm, I usually apply just as you described. I wonder if loose vs. pressed powder makes any difference? If I'm going to an event where I think I'll be photographed, I'll use some of this as well:

That doesn't really help if you want something that will travel well, but maybe a pass in the morning?

To go a little off topic, the best thing I did for my skin overall (used to have larger pores and cystic acne) was the oil cleansing method.

I'm not sure why, but some brands of mineral powder show my pores more than others. The Maybelline brand tends to show my pores but the L'Oreal one does not. I like the feel of the Maybelline better and the L'Oreal one actually feels almost itchy by comparison. Again, I don't know if the formulations have anything to do with pore visibility but this is my experience. I have actually started mixing the two to make my own perfect shade. I do what you do and use a kabuki brush and go in circles. I tap the brush into the lid first to shake off excess.

To be honest, I cheat.

I use liquid foundation w/ mineral tones for a base mixed with an all-day cream; then use the kabuki brush to swirl on top

You might try spitzing your face with a very light mist of water after applying and let it dry. You can pat the worst areas litely with finger tips too if needed. This will set the make-up.

I use Bare Minerals and have noticed that as well. Always using a mosturizer underneath and a little finishing powder after helps me.

I also use bare minerals. I think I remember them saying at the counter you can press the powder into larger pore areas (like a dabbing motion with the brush) before the swirling motion. My sister ultimately returned her bare minerals though because she never achieved the coverage she wanted. (she has some acne scarring that I don't)

thanks to all of you -- you each have offered something for me to consider. I didn't use moisturizer today before playing with the make-up, so that will hopefully be different. I should try the spritzing too. And learn the dabbing and swirling techniques better. I'm such a rookie... I may have to just be happy with the things that do work and get used to the pores.

Rae, thanks for the oil cleansing method. Haven't tried that one exactly but I have used rosehip oil (still do), olive oil and coconut oil on my skin before with good results. I have really reactive skin (weirdo that I am) so I don't use a lot of products on my skin and am careful with which ones I do use.
