Does anyone have experience with this Gap denim skirt?

For some time, I've had a denim skirt on my list of wardrobe gaps to fill. Since it would only get occasional weekend wear, it needs to be reasonably priced for me to justify the purchase. I'd also prefer more of a dressier, dark denim style. The other day I stumbled across this Gap denim skirt that appears to be an online exclusive:

It's exactly what I had in mind for a denim skirt, but I'm hesitating because of my many bad experiences with Gap jeans shrinking beyond wearability. Has anyone purchased this one by chance, and if so, what has been your experience with laundering it?

No experience with this skirt, but I love the style too. I noticed that it is a "return by mail only" item (when did Gap start doing that?), so that would make me hesitate to buy it online. Personally, I dislike having to pay for return shipping; much prefer returning to stores (free!).

I just ordered this AT denim skirt, which is just a little more expensive at $58.00, but I got it at 30% off, which brought it down to $40: Denim Pencil Skirt.

I'm not wild about the zipper fly detail on the Gap version.

Inge, thank you for bumping for me! Katja, thanks for the recommendation--I was actually in Ann Taylor over the weekend and saw that skirt, but I'm just not crazy about those seams down the front.

Angie, I didn't even check my local Gap because it looked like it was only available online. I will stop in and inquire there next weekend. But Sparky, you make a good point, so thanks for pointing that out. Yes, if it is only available online, that would make me hesitant because I hate paying shipping costs to return an item.

One last try before this post drops off the list into obscurity--does anyone have any feedback to offer on the shrinkage factor for Gap denim skirts in general?

Hi Frances! I don't have that particular skirt but I do have a denim skirt that I got at the Gap outlet last year. I've had no trouble with it shrinking. I wash it in cold water with regular detergent and line-dry. After it's completely air-dried sometimes I'll toss it in the dryer for a low-heat tumble to fluff it up but usually that's not even necessary. If your skirt is anything like mine it should hold up just fine.

That's all I can offer on Gap denim skirts, it's the only one I've ever owned (and I haven't worn their jeans since high school, about 10 years, so I don't even remember the shrinkage factor back then).

I haven't had any problems with Gap stuff shrinking, so I can't weigh in on that. But, I want to second Katja's caution about the fly front. After much trial and error with denim skirts, I have realized that the ones with a fly front, no matter how well they fit, tend to bulge out in that area (not a look I'm going for!). Ones with a back zip work much better, at least in my experience.

Katja and Angie, does the AT skirt have a vent in the back? I can't quite tell from the picture.

I'm still looking for a denim skirt that I can wear with tights. Which means either it needs to be lined (unlikely) or be vent-less so I can wear a slip under it. Otherwise my skirt creeps up my legs when I'm wearing tights. :O

Katja, I saw the skirt in AT tonight and it does have a back vent.

Sorry, I didn't read for a bit. Beth, even though the AT skirt does have a vent, I still recommend it for tights-wearing sans slip.

This is not a recommendation I make lightly because I have the exactly same issue with most unlined skirts when combined with tights and it drives me crazy. For some reason, this fabric doesn't bunch up or creep over my tights. So far, I have worn it with pantyhose, with thicker cotton tights, and with some quite thick bamboo tights.

Frances, it sounds like your search might have to go on if the vertical seams don't work for you. Will keep eyes peeled for you.

Melissa, this would be an answer to a prayer then! I've been struggling with the dreaded skirt creep for several years and pretty much gave up on the denim skirt/tights combo. Nothing like looking like you're wearing a ruched miniskirt when you're not!

Thanks for the additional tips, Ladies. Katja and Jonesy, you're absolutely right about the front zipper come to think of it. One of my pet peeves is the front panels of my skirts getting so wrinkled from sitting all day long. It's been a while since I've had one with a front fly zip--I'd forgotten how much I dislike those.

Colleen, thanks for weighing in on the shrinkage factor.

Ladies, the AT skirt just isn't for me--I can't get past those front seams. Rats! I knew I should have tried the JCrew denim pencil skirt from last season! Maybe I can still find it in my size on eBay.

Frances, both of these skirts actually avoid the main thing that I hate about denim skirts: the big brass button in the front, like the one on most jeans. It just creates bumps and bulges under so many tops.
