Haha LACeleste, I have that very same netiquette question. Seems to vary from forum to forum. Can't wait to hear the answer, relative to YLF's culture. And to see your frock coat!

No idea on the proper etiquette, but I enjoyed reading this thread that I somehow missed originally. I love long jackets, but they only work on me if I'm wearing heels (which I'm doing less and less).

Post your jacket LACeleste!

I like them but find them challenging. I had a long black blazer in the early 90s that I loved and wore to death. But fit problems are my big issue -- if a long jacket is big enough to fit my hips, it's usually too big on top. I recently tried a long Theory jacket and didn't like the proportion on me either, even though I liked it well enough 20 years ago. I don't know whether my eye has changed, or ten extra pounds really makes that much difference on my body. I have the height to pull off a longer jacket, but the hips really throw things off for me. Maybe if it were more unstructured, and worn open

I totally used to wear that long jacket with long skirts, just like Elaine on Seinfeld. There is a picture of me in my boss's office in the mid 90s wearing that exact look. Granny boots were probably involved too.

And now I will have this stuck in my head for the rest of the day:

What catnip said.

Not that long but longer than what has been popular for the past few years.

Shrunken and cropped and even those 22" blazers don't work as well with trousers and with pear shape. But I don't wear very skinny pants, so an oversized jacket is too much volume, epecially with a low- heeled shoe. So I like the slightly lean jackets around 25-26" and they have been scarce so far.

I like the look a lot and I think the lines are so elegant. However, it's really difficult for someone with my shape (super short waist, pear hips) to even find one that fits properly, let alone wear it well.

'90s fabness. This is where tall gals have an advantage because the proportions are easier for them to pull off to my eye.

LOVE. but Angie is right. It's trickier for a short gal like me to pull off. I have a jacket the length of Lauren Hutton's -- part of a suit I owned in yes, the 90s -- and I still love it. I wear it over a tee shirt and jeans. But I absolutely need to wear it with a heel or the proportions are off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought a "duster" was a coat that is longer than knee-length (i.e. ends somewhere between knees and ankles)? Like in the Matrix, or Buffy?

Hi,

Moved to new thread.

Bump. Tried to move post/start my own thread instead of piggybacking or hijacking Gryffin's--pics would not work so I'm staying here!

Success! Moved to new thread.

I love long jackets unreservedly.

I think you might have a reservation about the one I posted. I think you know what's what so I am very interested if you agree with me.

Did someone say "90s jackets?!"

A moment of silence for my favorite from the grunge decade: a jet black, mid-thigh, 100% wool beauty with the most flattering empire seaming I've ever found. I'd be wearing it today if it still fit.

(Just call me Elaine.)

LOVE them! I am tall with a strong shoulder line and proportionately long legs so these are my most flattering style on, and hence my strong bias towards.

I am happy to see some current looks with longer, lower stance jackets, dusters and coats.

Hi LaCeleste - no idea on etiquette but so glad you too are into long jackets. I'm off to catch your thread and see your frock coat. I have both long jackets, taliored about 33" and I do have a RL black denim frock coat which I love. Can't be enough long jackets in the world for me!!
Janet - I think I bought that theory jacket - was it the Marcelo that you tried on? They came out with it in their new fabric but somehow I did not like that one as much. I am a true ruler/rectangle build. I prefer to wear long jackets with skinnies or short skirts or tunics that come down no more than an inch or two below (I'm 5:3") so I have to offset the length. If you have more height I am sure you'd look great with a longer skirt. But I can understand how fit could be problematic. Although I think you would look awesome in a cutaway version!!
Lava - I am crushing on your description alone.
Diana - Here's hoping all wonderful jackets come to you!!
Angie - you are very wise. But it's like OTK boots, where there's a will...!!!
IK- glad you are on board!!
Claudia - I am sure you look divine!! Hope to see pics of you in your jackets!!

Love them, I am tall so they usually look the best IMO

Hey Gryffin! Just wondering how the Theory Marcela fits? Does it run small or true to size? I love the looks of it and would most likely wear it open in a casual style. Would love your insight!

NDMom - I had heard that Theory ran small but I thought this jacket was fine TTS. I am 5'3" about 111 lbs and usually a size 4. The 4 fit perfectly, sits perfectly fiush when buttoned and the sleeve length was perfect. It has some stretch to it which makes it very comfortable. I did try on the size 6 to compare but it lost it's sharpness and was just too big. Hope that helps. Very nice jacket IMHO. Hope you like it!!

Oh, Gryffen, I love long jackets!! So glad you started this thread, because I want to see more long jackets in the stores. Maybe we'll start a movement here. Here are three pics I find inspiring:

Ines, of course, and then one of my favorite bloggers- Beverly at http://www.beverlylikehills.co.....mment-form

Her Pim and Larkin coat has been worn in more subdued ways, but I love her creative, artistic enthusiasm in this photo. Too cool! You can tell she's in the design field. I find her to be endlessly inspiring.

At the moment I like them sleeveless.

Sinead - so glad that you are on board!! I will be in the trenches bringing these great jackets back with you!! Love you pics. I really love Bevery. She's a great inspiration. I have not been to her site in awhile so thanks for reminding me!! I did't know she was in design but makes sense she has a great eye!! We can admire together!!
Rachylou - interesting thought!! I had forgotten about sleeveless. I bet you could totally rock this style. Can't wait to see!!
Marley - Glad you are part of the long jacket fan club!!

Me, but gently taylored...(you know, I'm a pretended hourglass:-)).

Lyn - any way that works for you is good!! Know what you like and go after it!!

And Gryffin, to my eye at least, these long jackets look very chic and not 90's at all. I think they would look dated if they were longer, so I guess length is key.

Sinead - I think that's a very astute observation. Proportions are key!! Great point!
