Does anyone button their trench coat all the way up?

How often do you button your trench coat all the way up? I seem to be a 4 in shoulders, 6 in bust/torso & 2 in hips in Burberry trench coats. The size 4 buttons all the way & I can do necessary movement but I a worried that it might look too snug or be too snug if I gain weight. I'm wondering if anyone wears theirs buttoned all the way. If so is it for rain or cold? For cold I could wear a scarf & rain an umbrella would be needed for my head anyway. I guess I'm wondering if the 4 is a foolish choice for me.

Depends where you live, where you travel, and what else you are wearing.

I rarely button my trench all the way, but then, I've never been caught in a driving downpour in it yet. And I often wear a scarf at the neck. I'd say the 4 sounds like the best bet.

Elle, mine is a 6 so 4 would probably be fine for you. I do button mine all the way up... I run cold, like the strict look, and dislike scarves unless totally necessary, though.

Rae what is your bust measurement? I think it is my rib cage. I'm a 32 D? Used to be 32DD but band size didn't change, even though I lost 30lbs. I'm not a big scarf wearer either, but could if needed. Even the 4 looks too big at hip area in Kensington in beige but bust is snug in Newforest 4, but hip is fine as it is a slim fit design. Black doesnt seem as bad. Also my eight shape makes gathering & A lines unflattering on me. Maybe a belted trench isn't best style for me.

I button mine up (not a Burberry). But I live in Seattle and ride the bus, a lot.

Only if it's pouring and then I don't give a damn how I look, just that I stay dry. For cold, I always have a scarf.

I never button mine up all the way. I use scarves to fill in the neckline and keep warm.

Just to clarify I mean all the way to the neck, the double breasted styles. Not even top one or two buttons undone.

Yeah, that's what I understood you to mean. And again, I think it just depends how you are wearing it, in what conditions, etc. I'd want to be able to button mine all the way up like that, even if I don't actually do it.

Ah i am a 32 d as well, with the high hip of an 8 shape.

Do you think you have a smaller rib cage than me & broader shoulders? In your coat pics the shoulders fit but in your dress post today you seem to have a narrower rib cage than me. And I don't see the 8 hip on you. I know we can't compare with online pics but I can't believe that is a 6 on you.

I button up two of my trenches all the way - when necessary. And all my coats. 100% necessary. But then, I live in Seattle - to Anna's point - and travel to the East Coast in the dead of Winter.

For your needs Elle, I don't think it's a necessity.

Angie I do travel to the East Coast & elsewhere but I guess I can stick with the 4, which does button all the way & allow necessary movement. It might look a little snug but I can move. I just can't gain any weight. If I do I will have to sell that thing at a loss & get another one. If it is cold I will wear wool but if it is rainy the trench with an umbrella. I don't think the rain could get to my neck/chest with an umbrella. I used to wear a rain hat when I was a kid in Australia, no umbrella, with wellies & a rain coat or cape in safety yellow. Sometimes it was grey. I think the yellow was safer for kiddies crossing the road in the rain but my Mum would have bought whatever was cheapest. Maybe that is why I want a Burberry. To be rid of that feeling of deprivation. She also bought my clothes too big so I wouldn't grow out of them, not enough of them & made me save them for good. This gives me a lot of insight about my current clothing thoughts & habits.

I wonder if you might want to go with the 6 and have the hip tailored. I know personally I get anxious if anything is too tight on me anywhere.

Liz I could even go with a 4 in the Kensington & have the hip tailored. The A line of it is huge on me. It is slightly roomier in the torso than the Newforest but at least it still fits my shoulders. A 6 in any style is too big on my shoulders. My concern is that I read that tailoring interferes with the waterproofness of it. The new seams are not done the way they need to be to be waterproof. I'm not sure this is a fact but read that someone was told that by a tailor at a Burberry store. I thought the waterproof qualities were woven into the fabric but I also read it was coated after it was constructed. I'm also afraid of not liking the end result & not being allowed to return or exchange after tailoring.

Elle, it's so interesting to read your reflections about your childhood experience and the effects on your current clothing. I would say go with the 4; it works for now. If you must sell it at a loss, so be it. In the meantime you will have had the joy of it.

I will button and scarf up in winter, but I never wear collars that sit that high on my fat stubby neck because I'd feel choked.

You have to fit the body you have now, not the body you might be. Where is the joy in that?

I only button the body. But then I live in sydney where, its wild, windy and wet but not cold by american or canadian standards at all.

So I looked back at reviews for the Harbourne style that I have and it runs small, cut pretty narrow. That probably explains it. Because i always find jacket shoulders too wide for me, i don't think I have wide shoulders. I bet in your style I might take he 4 as well.

Except in winter, I don't like wearing scarf. So I fasten my trench coats until the neck. So the collar stay up.
