Doctor Who's Costume: yay or nay?

What say you good people? Is this look worthy of a time-travelling genius superbeing? Or has she failed to achieve PPL? Word to the wise: those are braces, not suspenders.

Intellectually I get the references to previous doctors, viscerally I’m not a fan.

The peacock trousers and the lace up boots are great, as is a flowing trench - especially if it looks cape-like. Not so much a fan of the top-shirt and braces. It might have been interesting to have it be a full on top to bottom rainbow stripe. The actress has a beautiful open face and I quite like the choppy short bob hair.

I want a pair of those crops. Love the colour, the width and the drape and the styling with lace up boots.

Ok, I’m not fully up on the show — maybe that will be my streaming video fun for today — and I have questions, but at first glance I think I’m more with Vogue than T&L (even though I love T&L).

Is it customary for new Doctors to appropriate previous Doctors’ styles? If not, why does it have to be so for the first woman Doctor? Why couldn’t she get a whole new look of her own without referencing the men?

Maybe it’s because I’m not a fan of the braces and stripes look. I definitely see the Mork from Ork thing. And why couldn’t the coat have been a beautiful cut and textile?

I like it. I think the proportions in the outfit are right and there is PPL.
What is the difference between braces and suspenders? They look like suspenders to me.

Suspenders are for socks Hehe. They’re suspenders. American English doesn’t have the word braces for clothing (braces are for teeth).

So... this is a dilemma. I think it’s a dull outfit; I mean, I would pull weeds in this outfit. It also doesn’t have that suave-vay element, that knack that I associate with Dr. Who...

...on the other hand, I absolutely love it and think it’s PERFECT! Hahaha!

I don't feel qualified to comment as I am not a true aficionado (we have several friends and relatives who are obsessive fans)..... Such a cultish show here but I have never become more than passingly involved.

I don't want to look at this for three seasons! Please, someone go grab Peter Capaldi's hoodie and purple velvet jacket out of the Tardis closet! She would look so awesome in that!

Truthfully, I think the actor is already youthful, which is great, but this outfit takes her into "cute-nerdy-girl-in-the-highschool-cafeteria" territory. I get all the nods for former Doctors, but even practical touches, like the lace up boots, here are not fully laced, which will be unfortunate when, as is inevitable, she runs! And yellow braces?

They often tweak costumes during the first season, so I'm hopeful we'll see the look evolve!

I do not follow Doctor Who but I think I would like the show. I like her costume but I get Vogue's point about the braces. I would not wear them.

I hope there are some pockets with special gear for encounters with aliens. Colours good, but fabrics besides the trench don't look especially modern. Looks a bit land girlish.

The part that bothers me is that the coat looks like it is going to fall off her shoulders when she gets moving. I see both Pink Floyd and Mork but that doesn't bother me at all .

Hmm, I've never watched Doctor Who, so I can't comment on this outfit. However, I just want to say that I really loved the actress,Jodie Whittaker in Broadchurch, and I would strongly recommend it if you like dramas. I thought Season 2 was even better than Season 1. I haven watched Season 3, yet.

Not a fan. The braces+cropped trousers+lace up boots do look British to me (skinhead), but I scratch my head over the horizontal line on her breast and the sloppy coat.

I am not a fan of the costume but I do approve of a female Dr. I would have preferred a more futuristic look (I was always a fan of the costuming in The Matrix). I also love Benedict Cumberbatch's costuming in Sherlock. This looks too juvenile to me.

Huge Doctor Who fan. So happy that she's a Time Lady this go 'round and can't wait for next season.

That said, I think this outfit is a miss.

Maybe it is my feminist heart, but why do the men Doctors get their own looks, but the woman Doctor has to borrow from previous Doctors? I don't like the "masculine" vibe that I'm getting from the costume. It may make sense because the Doctor has lived for 2,000 years as a male, but I'm not a fan and I'm hoping this isn't the only outfit. I mean, the "Master" as "Missy" dressed feminine and was still diabolical and wonderful.

It feels like a man who knows nothing about women's bodies and how to dress them dressed her -- which may be what they were going for.

Exactly! That's part of what bugs me about this look.

Maybe as the season goes on, she will evolve the look into one of her own.

It's neck and neck between yays and nays!

I must say, I'm on the fence about it and I feel like I'm quibbling. I do this every time they cast a new Doctor, but this time I'm so excited they cast the amazing Jodie Whittaker and I'm praying they don't muck it up.

I love the colour scheme. It's rich, it's unexpected and it suits her.
I quite like the coat, which looks to have some interesting details, but I'd prefer more structure. This looks like a bathrobe.
I'm not wild about the trousers and boots. Both are nice on their own, but they don't look good together.
I hate the braces. Sorry, they're gimmicky. They don't suit her.

Overall, I'm ok with her looking a bit dorky, that's in character. She does look rather juvenile, but with a pleasing explorer/scientist vibe. It's not bad for a first outing, but there's room for improvement. Lots of it.

PS: in British English, suspenders are garter belts. If she's wearing suspenders, we don't need to know about it. These are braces.

Mixed feelings. I like the sweater, I like the boots. I think the trousers could stand to be longer and the coat more structured. The look overall is a bit too trend-happy. The male Doctors never had to bother with trends, did they?
