Docs with dresses - with pics!

Took the plunge and tried a couple of dresses and skirts with my 14-eye Docs.

At the end is a photo of a new Soia & Kyo coat I scored today at Macy's for over $150 off retail. (Inge, if I keep it, it takes me out of contention for those Mark Eisen sweaters - boo hoo. But I need a long coat even more).

1. Do you think the Docs work with dresses/skirts - there are also shots of alternative footwear with the dress.
2. Is the denim pencil skirt too long? I think I might need to size down.
3. Is the S&K coat too tight? I photographed it worn over the leather jacket because that's about the bulkiest item I'd ever wear under it.

Laura, I love the docs with everything! (I think they are the most funky option for the dress but the others are good too.) I'd have to see the smaller size denim skirt to make a determination on that one. The length you have here is fine but a touch shorter *might* be better. The leather jacket is fabulous and the S&K coat looks like it fits just right.

It's nice to see your face. While everything looks awesome, that makes me smile the most.

Love the coat. If you are wearing a leather jacket under and still can move, I'd say it is just right.
Sorry I don't have a bright enough picture on my monitor to say whether I think the height of the boots is working.
I love seeing your pretty face and hair.

Thanks guys - I just realized what a totally goofy expression I have on my face - it's called "smiling, looking in the viewfinder, trying to hold the camera perfectly still and sucking in my stomach" all at the same time!

The Docs look great on you with the dress and skirts! Agree with Patience, the denim might be tiny bit long, but it is hard to say in the photo and I can't see how tight it is. If it's real tight I might leave the length as is; if it flares a bit I'd vote for shortening. (Does that make sense? I can't even explain this, it's more of a gut feel.)
The coat is super! And it's lovely to see your face, you're very pretty!

I think you totally rock these looks! My fave is the Burberry skirt/leather jacket/docs - very funky and fun! Do you feel like you are developing a personal style? I see one emerging!

I love the way the collar of the coat frames your face and haircut.

I'm so sad I had to return my pewter Mary Janes (I think they're the same ones you have on!) because they absolutely killed my feet. They look so fab on you.

Tarzy, I am chuckling because those pumps sort-of kill my feet as well. I am surprised that my feet don't do well with Aerosoles. Who knew? But these shoes are so great that I will suffer for fashion. They are great for walking from the car to the restaurant and back

Yes I just noticed after posting that maybe a style is emerging in my photos. I don't quite know what to call it yet. It's so great of you to bring that up, though - I appreciate the encouragement!

Antje and Patience, maybe I need to go to the store and try the denim skirt in a smaller size while attempting the "taking a photo in the dressing room" thing.

The docs look great with all the outfits. The outfit with the biker jacket is amazing! Is the navy dress from Club Monaco? I tried it on but it didn't look so great on me.

LAURA! I'm squealing in excitement about the Docs and dresses/skirt. I think you looks fabulous! Your style is definitely evolving and becoming a bit more defined and polished. It'll probably still develop for a long time (mine seems like it's always changing, hee hee).

Laura, I think all 3 looks are great. My favourites are the Burberry skirt and the dress with blouse (an idea I will steal at some point!). I'd wear both of those outfits in half a heartbeat. I'm falling hard for the look of docs after seeing your post, Tanya's, and Patience's. I think the S&K coat looks very funky and suits you well. I've ogled that exact one in my local stores myself You're gorgeous, by the way!

While I am not generally not a docs fan, I think these look really great paired with the dresses as well as with the skirt. Have you tried them with your skinny jean leggings?

The skirt seems a bit long - especially since you are petite. The length of your Burberry skirt is more flattering.

Love the boots paired with your Burberry skirt & awesome Moto jacket - very edgy & sooooo cool! That is a killer outfit!!!

The S & K jacket looks pretty good. It's hard to tell with the heavy leather jacket underneath - it looks kind of bulky but I honestly think it's because of what you have underneath. These collars are made for people with shorter hair & long graceful necks- it just frames your face so beautifully.

I don't even know where to begin. Everything looks gorgeous Laura.
I love the Docs on you paired with skirts and dresses, it's edgy and elegant. I like the denim skirt as is, and that cream cardi is beautiful.

And sigh, that leather jacket with the Burberry skirt: pure perfection!!

I don't think the S&K coat is too tight Laura: I have it myself and I know that if you can fit your leather jacket underneath, then you're good to go. The grey is amazing too (I found it difficult to choose between the purple and the grey). It looks stunning on you, and the collar accentuates your beautiful features and hair (have I ever mentioned I love your hair?-)

Pity about the Mark Eisen sweaters, but you just cannot return this coat!!!-)

Thanks everyone, I am hugely flattered and humbled by the compliments from all of you super stylish women! Thank you I can't believe how much I am learning from you all, not just about clothing but about myself and of course life in general! It is a gift.

I *might* return or exchange the denim skirt but will wear it with tags on for a brief trial run. I have the feeling it's going to be one of those skirts that slides around my waist and makes me crazy. We'll see!

Marianne - yes, the dress is Club Monaco, and Briana, the moto jacket is Bebe.

Is that the same coat as yours, Inge? Figures, since we are style twins! Thank you for the sizing advice - I will keep it knowing (as Angie mentioned) that if worst comes to worst, I can have the buttons moved. I couldn't believe the coat was on such a huge sale yesterday - the salesperson told me it was full price, then I asked her to tell me the style number (so I could stalk it, you know me!) and when she scanned the tag, we were both shocked at the sale price. Inge, I will live vicariously through you on those Mark Eisen sweaters - I hope you score!

My favorite look was the plaid skirt, leather jacket and docs. I have not really embraced the docs with skirts look, but your outfits have started to make me turn the corner. YOU look great in them, and are working this look to it's fullest potential. Something about your style, works with this combination for some reason. Do you have particularly small feet? I ask because I'm wondering if my dislike of the Docs/Dress combo has to do with foot size? Often times when I see Docs with a Dress or Skirt, the woman's foot look dispropotionately big and I think that is why I can't wrap my brain around this look. So if you have very small feet, I could see why this looks better to me.

**Please note that some styles take me longer to embrace than others--I don't mean to insult anyone who is wearing Docs with Dresses--it's just not a look I have learned to appreciate yet.**

Thanks Nicole - Yes, I too wonder if foot size might have something to do with the success of the docs with dresses look. I wear a size 6 1/2 and actually just mailed these docs back for the next size down - I had bought a US 7 and docs run big! I'm going for a size 6. Maybe that does help the proportions of the look?

I really am walking on clouds. The ladies here are so lovely and generous in their compliments! In fact I just printed a hard copy of this thread to carry with me and look at when I'm having a bad day (awwwww .... sappy, I know ... but that's how good your comments made me feel!).

I don't remember spotting any last year - but the dress is usually pretty conservative. Luckily I sent back my Docs yesterday for a new size so I can't scandalize everyone with my new pseudo-punk look

Is a cookie exchange self-explanatory? Do you get one kind of cookie (one person to one person exchange) or does everyone get a little bit of all the cookies? It makes me smile just typing "cookie exchange."
