Doc Martens Sizing

Does this brand tend to run big or small? Wide or narrow? I have a pair of booties and a pair of fisherman sandals on my wish list. Not sure if I should size up or size down or give up completely. I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel with 6.5 wide as my best size. I sometimes have to size down for sandals and size up for closed shoes, but the last doesn't tend to fit quite right when I size up. Dansko 37s tend to fit me because they are 6.5-7.

If this brand runs narrow - TTS, I will pass since I need TTS - wide.

I really need stuff other than footwear. . .

My experience is that they run a bit big *and* wide, but it really may depend on where you fall in the Euro size range. I'm between 36 and 37 (the Docs I've had have been UK 4s I think...) and my feet run slightly narrow. But I just wear mine with thick socks anyway...

Others' mileage may vary.

I find they run wide but true to size for length. I wear a US 7.5-8 (euro 38-38.5) and have low volume feet that are narrow at the heel. UK 5 Docs are too short for me (my toes hit the front), so I have to go up to a UK 6 which is definitely too wide. I just live with it but they are definitely roomy even with a 3/4 orthotic, foam insole, AND thick socks. And I have the Clemencys, which are supposedly a little narrower than classic docs.

I wear a us 6.5 and my feet are wide-ish and short. My classic docs have all been a UK 5 but a bit roomy - most comfortable with wool socks. Their newer women's size versions of the classics (eg 1460w instead of the unisex 1460) I found that a 4 was great. My women's shoes and sandals (in other words not the classic docs) are a 4 I think but I'll check when I'm home.

Just confirmed that my Clarissa sandals are a UK 4 / Euro 37. They fit so well - sandals are always hard for me because my toes are short, so there's often too much extra footbed past my toes. Not on these. And they have arch support! If those are the sandals you're considering, I highly recommend them. (Edit: that is, if very clunky shoes are your style. They're mine but it's not the usual delicate sandal.)

I found my boots were TTS, and slightly wider.

I have a D/EE width foot and had to buy unisex Doc Martens to get the required width. The width of the shoe definitely depended upon the style. I found them to be true to size, but I needed shoes that laced up to accommodate my wide forefoot and comparatively narrow heel.

In my experience width relates to style, but generally tends to be on wider range for most. I have the Clarissas too, and I ordered my normal Doc size but I wish I had ordered a size smaller because my short toes leave a big gap at the front. But in a lot of Docs a UK 7 just fits perfectly on me.

As others have said -- they seem to run TTS in length and a tad on the wide side (especially in the toe box). I think Ceit is right that the width may relate to the particular style of the boot.

They are not the typical lace-up Docs. They seem to have the rigid soles I need, but the question is whether I need more footwear. . .

But I see they only come in bigger sizes, I wear a 6 - or 6.5. Does anyone know if these are made in smaller sizes and Nordstrom is out, or is this a unisex shoe that starts at a 7?

I am a size 5.5 (UK) and sometimes buy 6s and sometimes buy 5s in shoes generally. My feet are very wide indeed. In DMs I buy 5s (which feel a touch tight when I first put them on), because when I once bought a 6 (that felt perfect when I first put them on), they stretched over time and became too loose. I buy size 6 for things like running shoes, to allow for the socks.

In EU sizes I am a 38, or sometimes 39 for boots if I will be wearing thick socks with them.

In US/Canada sizes I am a 7.5 (sometimes 7; sometimes 8) except for running shoes, with which I wear socks, so I buy 8wides.

I wish DMs would remain in fashion for ever, because they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned, and as I said, I have very wide feet.

Be sure to get the good quality British-made leather ones though. I doubt the plastic-looking ones made in China would be comfortable.

Pewter Clarissas in size 4 should be arriving this coming week! If they fit well, I have to decide if I want this color or the traditional black and if I should buy sandals at all since my toes have Raynaud's and get cold at the drop of a hat.
