At first I thought this was recessionista chic gone crazy but then I thought how many people wear beautiful lingerie for their eyes only. Does all beauty need to be on show?

Interesting. I really like the shape, but am definitely torn about the hidden sapphires. Plus I'm thinking they might not sparkle so well after a while. Lotion and small skin flakes lodging into the setting.

I like the idea of having a little secret when you get dressed. Could be lingerie, fun socks, a belly button piercing...whatever you want. But it's only for you and perhaps someone close to you.

How much one spends is entirely between them and their budget. Some people might enjoy or even prefer to invest in something that is for their eyes alone. Who knows? Personally I can't stomach spending that much money on anything, so it's hard for me to be objective.

Does beauty need to be on the show? No. But even the wearer can't see the beauty of the stones. It makes no sense to me.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but my guess is perhaps the sapphires are of so poor quality that it's cheaper to make the ring with them than to make it out of solid gold. I could be completely wrong (I don't know much about the cost of gold or sapphires), but this is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with.

However it would look really nice worn as a pendant on a chain... so I guess I have two reasonable explanations.

Eh, kind of goofy. Lingerie, belly piercings...these things don't require a lot of effort to be visible - you catch sight of yourself in the mirror, your SO sees you undressing...but a ring with hidden stones requires you to yank it off and inspect it...I suppose that's not too far off from having an inscription on the inside of the ring, I would rather an inscription than hidden gems...

My husband and I honeymooned in NZ during the LoTR craze...I really wanted "my precioussssss" inscribed...it just makes me laugh.

I think it's not necessarily about beauty only being on show, it's about genuinely beautiful/good/quality things *not having* to be on show... when you know it's there that should be enough, you don't need others' admiration to get the confirmation it is truly valuable or beautiful or (insert other adjectives), you feel good just knowing it' there...

My friend and hubby had their wedding rings made with a diamond inside, which is when I fist encountered this concept, but knowing them it made perfect sense.

Even more baffling Kate is the concept of wearing diamonds on the inside yet advertising it on the outside.

No disrespect to your friends Ellie, I can see the symbolism of keeping beauty treasured or hidden but the look is not personally appealing to me.

LOL, first thing that came to mind after reading the post was the scene from Sex and The City 2 where the ladies meet the women wearing burkas over their newest fashion collections in UAE. About the secret embellished rings, they don't really appeal to me (I'm more traditional and prefer the diamond on the outside on my wedding ring..)
