I haven't been to the cobbler in years, but dropped off a pair of boots today. He requires payment in advance, which is fine, but I was surprised to see space on the receipt to add a tip.
Have I missed a finer point of tipping etiquette, or is this another example of American tipping run amok? It doesn't help that I thought the price was very high to do a small job, but also that apparently tipping was expected prior to the job being completed. Even if I was planning on tipping, I'd have waited until I saw the final job.
As it was, I signed the receipt without adding anything to the total, but left feeling odd about it. Your thoughts?
