Do you tip on a haircut re-do?

I had my hair cut and colored last week. My stylist tweaked the cut just enough that I am struggling with it this week. There's one area that is not cooperating and not cohesive and is taking me way too long to wrestle into submission. UGH! So I made an appointment for a re-do, and I expect it to take not very long at all. I do not expect to be charged for this fix, but should I still tip? How much?

I have seen her for years and am usually satisfied and have never asked for a re-do...if I've had a problem with the cut or color, I usually wait until my next appointment to address it.

That's a really good question. I'm not sure what the etiquette is, but I probably wouldn't since it was their fault and now I have the inconvenience of having to take time out of my day to get it fixed.

That's a good question--I'd like to see how others answer. I had a similar problem recently and I did tip--but that's because I am really prone to having angst about these things and the tip seemed a cheap way to avoid my emotional churn. Sara L's answer seems completely valid and, in fact, any initial tip you may have given was predicated on having received a good result (which you didn't get).

It depends. Did you originally OK the change and now you just aren't feeling it? If so, then I might tip. If she made the change without your consent, then I might not tip.

I assume you tipped initially. Unless you asked for the original change in your cut, I wouldn't tip for a correction. My feeling is that a tip is an optional expression of satisfaction and you aren't satisfied.

Well, I was ok with the small change until I got home and looked carefully in the mirror. It's not always easy to assess changes sitting in the chair when the cut has been dried and styled and the next client is waiting. In fact, it often takes a week of working with my hair for me to decide if the cut will work or where potential problem areas are. I have a lot of very thick hair.

I don't want to tip since I am making time out of my day to go back, but I do have a good relationship with my stylist and expect that to continue. But giving her more money irks me. My hair has become so expensive what with color upkeeps and trims.

Maybe I'm just cranky after last night

Elle, I had asked for a change to address a problem area but the change made more issues. Yes, I always tip at least 20%.

I still wouldn't tip for the change ( but I'm a hardliner). You are a generous tipper and don't usually ask for anything between haircuts.

If the re-do was free, and I would expect that to be the case, then I would tip, if the redo was done well, to my satisfaction and with good attitude

I always tip if the service was done in good faith. Was she ignoring your instructions or rude? Mistakes and bad haircuts happen. If you have a long time relationship with this person, it shows you still honor her service. Good service is hard to find, and even if something is not to your 100% satisfaction, it sounds like she fit you in quickly to remedy it.

The redo will be free I am sure. She's lovely and usually does a good job, but this tweak is hard for me to style...takes way too long to work it. I honestly couldn't tell that until I got home and tried it myself. It'll drive me nuts to deal with it. So whose fault is it? No one...I am just not happy and I am sure her ultimate goal is to have a happy client.

I expect the fix will retake 5 or 10 minutes. Would you tip based on the cost of the original cut? That seems excessive.

I'm a generous tippe mr and expect it to be done right the first time. So I would not tip on a redo. A good stylist would refuse to accept a tip on a redo until you were happy

I prefer to err on the side of tipping too much and/or too often.

Based on your initial post, even I wouldn't tip for this. You're showing good faith by coming back and letting her remedy the issue.

Based on your update saying that you had requested the change in a historically challenging zone? I'm on the fence. Personally, if I had an appointment coming up around the holidays, I wouldn't tip for the fix-up service, then I would top up whatever amount I'd been planning to give her for the holidays. Thus showing I value her service overall.

20% is what I tip in the U.S. if I'm barely satisfied. People have to heat their homes and feed their kids.

But I'm generally in pain, and cranky in the best of circumstances, so I also sometimes fantasize about charging cosmetic personnel for how much it drains me when they talk a lot more than I'm up for.

I go in between cuts to get my bangs trimmed up. I wear them long and they get into my eyes before my next cut. My wonderful stylist never charges me for this, but I always tip her $5. I think if I ran in to tweek the cut I would also tip her, but I want to keep a good relationship with her.

It depends on your relationship with your colorist. Do you see him on a regular basis, he has your shade on file, knows when and how to put treatments? Then yes, a symbolic tip.

If not, no tip should be necessary.

Thanks all. I guess a "symbolic" tip is in order, if only as a way to say "thanks" for fitting me in so quickly.

I do not think the tip is necessary, but it is certainly a nice, appreciative gesture. I have been going to the same stylist for many years and always give her something for her efforts with respect to re-dos and touchups... usually 15-20% of what she would regularly charge for such a service.
