do you still have a computer?

my personal laptop (the one i am writting this post on) is offically, i learned a couple of weeks ago an "antique"....(it's from 2010). i know that at some point --probably soon, i'm going to have to retire it....i have an old, 2nd generation ipad, which needs to be upgrade, because the battery isn't holding its charge as well as it should, and i'm behind on updating the operating system.....i have iphone at will get me thru another year or so....i know when i do upgrade my iphone i'm going to get the larger plus size. what i'm trying to decide is if it need an actual computer, or if i could just get an 12 inch ipad. i find that at home, i generally use my laptop for web browsing, listening to music/audiobooks and solitaire...has anyone else given up a true computer?

(i should add that i have a work laptop that i bring home every weekend, but don't like to use it for really personal things)

We switched from our old Mac to a laptop a few years ago. I also have an iPad and iPhone but for me some things are just easier to do on a “real” computer. I love the iPad for emails and leisure use but my laptop is easier for bill paying and things like that. I do use them both and it was an inexpensive laptop so it was worth it for me.

No way. I do not like laptops. I LOVE my gigantic desk top screen and desk.

I use a laptop connected to a huge screen and a wireless keyboard and mouse which allows me the flexibility of both systems Do you not need anywhere to save files, store documents etc? I also have an iPad, but just use it for work (some specific sales platforms) and for reading books and magazines.

I have a laptop that might be vintagey. I use it when I need to use Excel, for example. Most of the time I use my ipad.

hmmmm. i currently use a 16 inch laptop at home. honestly, for what i do at home its big enough...and i've found that i rarely work on files that i save. mostly what i have saved is PDF documents which i could i think i could save in the cloud...need to investigate that...your giving me thinking points, which is what i'm looking for....

I have a desktop with a nice big screen, but I do work on Word and Excel so I definitely still need a computer. I also use my iPad daily when I'm not in my office and I love it. But, my Mom's computer needs an update like yours and I'm considering just getting her an iPad instead. She only uses her computer for 'playing around' so she really only needs email and web browsing.

Love my MacBook Air though may be time for an upgrade. Truthfully, 70% of the work I do day to day and practically all of the leisure is on my phone . I’m leaning on companies not that I work with to develop better iOS platforms that will make me more efficient since I am on my phone all the time and hate having to switch to even a laptop to get somethings done.

We have a pc desktop that I use to store photos and and generate excel graphs which work better on a pc environment.

I have a very small laptop/notebook, which I rarely use, because I hate it. I use my fairly new custom designed desktop...which I love. We have 2 of them, both custom made and designed by my techie electrical engineer husband. I am a relic. I am not ashamed, because these work great!

I use a desktop computer and got a new one late last year. The computer is solely for financials -banking, investing, taxes, budgets, etc..
I have a laptop that I use for reading books, social media, emails, online purchases, etc. I have an ancient iPad2 which I use for doing crosswords or occasionally download books. I decided that I am not replacing it; not worth it. My phone is also a 4yr old Samsung Galaxy 4 which I am not replacing until I have to.

My first desktop computer in 1990 lasted me 10 years.It is the internet that has screwed everything up requiring constant updates, updated software, etc.

I’ve never liked laptops. I do all of my office work on my giant desktop screen computer, which I love. When I’m on the road or out of the office I do most everything on my phone. At conferences or whenever I have to do work with spreadsheets, I use my iPad and a keyboard case.

I feel as if my 13" MacBook Pro is my actual brain, and I am completely lost without it! I used to have an Air (and I loved it) as well as a desktop but I found I was travelling so much and not using the desktop so I just switched to a laptop all the time. It works for me because the small keyboard fits my small hands and I often sit on the couch vs. at a desk.

I need a computer because I'm a writer and editor. I strongly dislike the ipad -- my kid and DH both have them and love them but I'm a touch typist and get extremely frustrated if I don't have a responsive keyboard and don't like swiping etc.

I do use my phone for a lot, though. I read books on it sometimes. I also have a Kindle for that.

I had a desktop version for personal use and bought a laptop for travel. I ended up using the laptop more often than I'd anticipated.

The desktop version died two years ago and I haven"t replaced it but I don't see myself going to a format smaller than a laptop so if it becomes obsolete I'll be going back to a desktop.

I have a Mac desktop that’s 7 years old which is what I use when I shop online ( bigger screen) and holds all my music at the moment.
We have a Mac laptop that’s 9 years that we inherited from our daughter that DH and I share when we are on the road. and
I recently inherited daughter’s old iPad 2014, which is what I am using at the moment. Still learning how to use it.
In future- when the time comes I think I will replace laptop and iPad but may pass on desktop.
But they will always be Macs.

I'm mainly on my 5 year old iPad, and have a 1 year old iPhone for when I'm out and a about. We have a house computer in our small office - all new about 2 months ago with large screen. One of our boys has a vision impairment - but we all like the big screen! I get the least amount of computer time - the home office is DH's domain.

I couldn't get along without my big screen desktop. Unfortunately I've been pretty much glued to it the last few weeks--I'm going to present a paper at a history conference. Sometimes I have as many as 20 files open: theses, digitized historical newspaper articles, photos, and my drafts. I also use it for Skyping with friends and family. And for scanning and storing family photos.

Lately I haven't been using my laptop stuff. I do use it for personal stuff. My old iPad ran out of storage space so I just got a new one--smaller, lighter, and much faster. Easy to carry around with me. I like to use it to read Kindle books.

Dh has so many computers that I've lost track. He loves tech stuff and always has to have the latest version. I do get annoyed when he leaves his laptop set up on our kitchen table. Our kids are gone so we both have a separate home office.

I have a laptop. DH has a laptop and a desktop. I could use his desktop but I rarely do. I use my laptop for my personal stuff and my work stuff. I couldn't function without it. I need a real keyboard.

I have both a laptop and an all in one dell large screen pc. I like the large screen for excel and access databases. the large screen allows for multiple aps to be opened at the same time where the screen on the laptop is just too small.

Oh ms maven- you have the same kind of visitors we get. Deer love my flowers and I hear coyotes baying a lot of nights. Waiting for the bears to start showing ( we moved our bird feeder in prep).... we really do live in civilization- just near a small mountain preserve. Just not crazy about woodchucks though

so interesting.... I should say that for work, I have a laptop that at work gets pulled into a larger screen...we have security on our work stuff that makes it hard to use your personal computer or laptop, so I will always (or a least for the next 10ish years) have accesses to a "real" computer. I am thinking that later this spring, i'll upgrade to a 12inch ipad with a keyboard, and try to a month to just use that and my phone and see if I miss/feel the need to use my personal laptop.

Nope, I have a MacBook Air and an Alienware.

My husband mainly uses the Alienware for gaming. I use the MacBook Air and love it.

I have a desktop with a huge screen but I do a lot of work with spreadsheets and large tables. I also need the memory storage. So, I think it boils down to whether you need a regular keyboard and/or a big screen. If not, a small laptop or ipad will probably be fine

Another MacBook Air fan here. It's what I use the most - like the real keyboard. I also have a small iPad and my phone and mostly use those for instagram and reading Kindle books.

Oh gosh. How funny. I need a new computer - I always do laptops now and plug into a monitor and keyboard if doing a big project or something. But I’m not buying one because frankly I only use it about once a month...

I have a laptop that would be considered an antique, too! I still use it for online bill pay, because I can never remember my passwords to do the stuffs on mobile or tablet. I also have to use quickbooks for my husband sometimes.
I'm dreading the day that laptop dies. How will I ever remember all of my passwords?

I know people who attach giant monitors to their Surface. My computer demands are basic, but I wouldn’t be able to get by using an iPad alone, even though the newer iPads now have a dock station and seem to be emulating the Surface in capability.

I haven't owned a desktop for the last 15 or so years. I've had a succession of MacBook pros during that time, which are essential for my work so I'm never giving them up. I like the portability, so I don't have to work at a desk at all times. My current one (13" 2017 MacBook pro) is super light, it's not even a hassle to carry it around most days. I use it to write, make and give presentations, do intensive image analysis, and other data-heavy things. I do have a big monitor that I attach sometimes (although honestly I'm too lazy most days), and an external keyboard and mouse that I use most of the time at work.

I also have an iPad that I love, and use all the time, mostly for surfing the web, tv/videos, sometimes reading (although I prefer to use my kindle for ebooks when I can). But I would never give up the laptop for it.

I am exactly like Suz in the sense that my life would be much harder without my laptop. Although I do some things from my phone, I do not find it practical at all, and I cannot get myself to use my i-pad for anything else than reading books and check e-mail.
