This is obviously Team X/Y type of question *grin*

Which one do you prefer and why?

I need new ________ (<-- insert product here) and am really on the fence what to get. Lipstick is a bit more polished to my eye, but also higher maintenance. For me at least. And I want to work on achieving polished look with minimal effort, which is why lipgloss seems an attractive option especially after trying one tester for a few weeks. It was a good, quality product and gave me that feeling my makeup was complete, but I didn't need to check it too often.

But, while searching for the right color and not having much luck I've discovered nice a lipstick as well. So, I'm back to square one...

Also, what is the best way to find the right shade? Try them all on and wear for a while? (One at a time, obviously )

SAs were not helpful at all when I asked... I know the color is a personal choice, but I'm a bit lost and needed some guidelines, which I didn't get. All I know is I want my product to freshen up my face.

So, this is where I ask you to please step in and give me your opinion. Pink(ish), red(ish), nude(ish)???... help! My coloring can be seen in this thread.

I'm on team lipstick, mainly because gloss just doesn't last on me, and I'm not good about reapplying frequently.

Plus, I'm a fan of a defined lip; I think it gives a polished look.

I think you'd look good in a muted red, but it really is personal preference.

Along the same lines, right now my favorite lipstick is Chanel's Rouge Noir. It's really scary black and Goth looking in the tube, and does look that way if you apply it heavily, but if you apply it thinly or mostly blot it off it makes a gorgeous color lip stain that lasts and lasts. I also love it layered lightly over a too-bright red to tone it down.

I only wear lipstick because I don't like the feel of lipgloss at all. I like the idea of a muted red on you, like Parsley suggested. Or a pinkish red! I have a new lipstick I love and wear all the time now, it's MAC Glaze Hot Tahiti, you can see it here http://karlasugar.net/2009/09/mac-glaze-lipsticks/. It's the perfect shade for me, not too dark or red, essentially my natural lip colour only darker.

I do both, but keep the color close to my natural lip color so I don't end up with a ring of dark lipstick. I like Clinique butter surge lipstick in DeLovely and Buxom lipgloss in Sugar. Both are very non-color but with a slight sparkle. Of course once I receive my prize book I will be trying to find my own "Shade of Red".

I'm Team Lipstick - two favourites right now are The Body Shop lipsticks (I have three colours) because they have beeswax in them and actually moisturize your lips while wearing. Plus it's got good lasting power. I also love Brave Red by MAC - amazing colour and lasting power. But I've recently discovered MAC Lipglass (yes...glass) - it comes in beautiful colours, has great shine but not that "wet" look and lasts just as long on the lips as their lipstick...so I might be switching teams...

Definitely team lipgloss. I don't even own any lipstick anymore. I really like MAC glosses because virtually every color seems to be flattering. (I'm sure that's not actually true, and obviously I haven't tried them all, but they do seem to be pretty wearable.)

I like lipstick b/c my hair gets stuck to the gloss (wind, etc) -- but I qualify my response in that my lipstick has a sheerer texture. I like MAC lustres and glazes, though now I'm wearing 2 products from Clinique (Plum Nude and Angel Red). After these tubes are gone I will likely go back to MAC or Besame lipstick (depending on how well I can match the Clinique shades).

I like both actually! (not together) For you - I'd choose a reddish lipstick, but try Angie's trick of using lip balm on your lips first (my favourite is Burt's Bees) to soften the effect.

For days when you're just not in the mood for red lipstick - try the Burt's Bees lip balm in Replenishing Pomengranate:

Also try the mango one too - both are pretty good. I don't love the honey balm or the "refreshing acai" or whatever it is quite as much as I love the mango and pomegranate formulations.

Do not be put off by the fact that the gloss is both a shimmer and appears to be a very dark colour. It's not at all - it gives just barely a hint of plum colour - gloss, but better than clear gloss. This brand of gloss lasts and it isn't sticky either. I haven't found a drugstore gloss that I really love, though I've tried a few I was given some of this gloss in a Christmas gift box last year, and wouldn't have tried it otherwise. This is really good gloss

Lately I love a tinted lipbalm. I am using Burt's Bees in Rhubarb. It's a lovely deep berry color, but it goes on sheer and doesn't look heavy like a lipstick would. I love the moiturizing (not sticky like some glosses) feeling that it leaves, along with a faint tingle like Blistex. Great for winter lips!

I also love the Clinique Black Honey - despite the name it is not that dark a color when worn. It seems to be one of those colors that flatters everyone.

I can't stand sticky glosses, so I am a lipbalm girl, or a light lipstick. The lipstick I like best right now is the Boots No 7 (via Target) brand - I think the variation I have is called sheer something-or-other. I've also got some MAC lipsticks which are lovely but a bit dryer and more formal than I prefer these days. For most days I go for tinted lipbalm - Neutrogena used to sell one I loved, which they don't make anymore so I'm nursing along my last one. I don't like the Burt's Bees tinted balm - too waxy and over-mentholed.

I was wearing mostly gloss before but now I am moving towards the lipstick: I like how it makes my face more alive. I also use Angie's trick with a layer of balm under the lipstick to make it more translucent.
I think that with your high contrast coloring lipstick will look awesome!

Ornella, I am team lipstick Two great reds are Max Factor "Hint of Red" which is soft and not as Matt. In some ways it kind of mimicks a lip gloss but with a bit more substance. The other is MAC "Rubywoo". It is a very matt very 1940's red... great for evening glam.

I'm team sheer lipstick or tinted lip balm. I dislike the stickiness of gloss. For everyday, I usually use either the Clinique Black Honey or the Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose or Hibiscus. I have a couple of Clinique Butter Surge lipsticks that I use when I want more color.

Laura, I sympathize with you on Neutrogena discontinuing their lip sheers. That was all I used for 3 or 4 years, and I was so sad when I went to buy a replacement tube of my favorite color and found out that it wasn't being sold. My last tube is just about empty, and I still feel like I haven't found a perfect replacement. Sigh . . .

I used to be a gloss girl, but within the last year, my aging lips are getting dull in color (sigh). So now I use a natural looking lipstick. During the spring/summer, I tried a slightly bright peachy-pink, but now I'm wearing a peachy brown. I did try red, but it just felt too strong.

My grocery store will take back open cosmetics within a 2 week time frame. If you're open to buying drugstore brands, you might see what your store's policy is on returns. That would be a good way to try experiment with new colors.

I like Dior Addict lipstick. It's between a gloss and stick. I can apply it without a mirror and it's very soft, but not as soft as a gloss.

I think either one lasts about 5 minutes on me. I like anything that isn't drying. I have had good luck getting sales people to help me with colors because it is just impossible to predict. I don't have much experience and those little tubes can be expensive!

I am one of those people who "eat off" my lipstick in a matter of minutes. Maybe it's because I eat and talk a lot.

A few years ago I switched to "lip stain," and I'll never go back. I guess you'd call it a long-wearing lip color with a top coat. The lip color lasts forever on me (an almost impossible feat before I started wearing this stuff), and the top coat is easy to reapply (or I can just use lip balm as a top coat). I prefer the ones where the top coat is more of a balm than a gloss... I think the one I am currently using is by Cover Girl? Or maybe Maybelline? Not sure... it's a drugstore brand.

As for color, I always follow the rule from the How Not To Look Old book (of course, I'm old, so that's why I follow it): pinks. I used to wear more reds/browns/mauve tones when I was younger, but now that I'm older I find that pinks look more youthful.

I rarely wear makeup and when I do it is minimal, but lip stain is the one thing I wear to look more polished.

I wish lipstick lasted longer on me! I do like MAC lipstick. I have one gloss, by Revlon, that lasts longer than lipstick and seems more moisturizing. My ideal product would be a hybrid of the two! I don't like too-shiny finishes, but I don't want dull matte either.

I often think it would be nice to find a red that works on me, but that does not seem to exist. I just think I look better with less emphasis on lips and playing up they eyes instead.

I like lip pencil and gloss. Pencil stays for me, unlike lipstick, and the gloss provides the shine. I only carry the gloss.

But I wear lipstick too sometimes.

I much prefer lipstick, but this time of year my lips get SO DRY and actually flake and peel (yuck). I have to be careful to only use a sheer, moisturizing lipstick or a lip gloss. Tinted balms are good too, but none of those last as long as lipstick for me.

I second Angie's recommendation of Chanel and Mac. Chanel almost stains my lips with color, so it seems to last a long time for me. It's my all-time favorite lipstick. Plus it feels really light when it's on and I like the smell (I think it's roses). Nars makes a pretty good lipstick also, although the lighter Nars colors don't seem to last as long on me as Chanel.

For everyday, I like a pinkish-rosy-nude lipstick -- basically, your lip shade but a little more saturated. My favorite is the NARS Velvet Matte lip pencil. It goes on really easily and is long-lasting. For going out, I stick with a fairly nude lip with gloss at the center.

Another Dior Addict lipstick fan here! High five Jenava!
I loathe the texture of lipgloss, but adore the shine. Dior Addict gives me lipstick with super high shine. It isn't very long-lasting but I don't mind, I love the texture and shine.
My favorites are Beige Casual (222), Parisian Chic (454), and Rose Déshabillé (260) .
I also own it in a nice red, New Look (745), and a deep plum color, which is no longer available.
