Last semester, one of my instructors spent some time talking about style. It came up in the context of developing a recognizable artistic style, which is something that a lot of young artists are anxious to do. He insisted that style isn't just something you do on paper; rather, it is something that encompasses your whole being. In his opinion, to have style, you have to live it and be it. Style arises from the issues that concern you and the way you address them, and it spills over into the way you present yourself (including the way you dress), and, yes, your artistic output. You can't have style in one area and not in another, or have an artistic style that is in disagreement with other aspects of your personal style.

What do you think? Whether or not you are an artist, do you agree that style is more than just how you dress? How so?
