Those are really cool, Laurel!
Wow, so many people answering this, didn't see this comming. Ok, I have to say I am 22 -almost 23, lol, but that's tomorrow. And still going to college. The most serious thing I do regularly is teach 5 year old kids, so they sort of suit my style. I don't wear them so often though because my coats/jackets are a bit more dressy and I love them, so I'll stick to cons only when I wear more sporty jackets or anoraks. I find them 'cute' because I think they add to a more childish look, just like polka dots, pink (on women), ballet flats, empire t-shirts or puffy short sleeves (think snowhite). Anyways, I'm not a native speaker of English so I may be using the wrong word.
Someone asked if my dad was referring to the 80s/90s punks. My dad was a Doc Marteens wearer, so now, he's not talking about those. He's talking about low-class working men, like a... trowel? Not to say there's anything wrong with that, he actually worked on that for sometime himself. But it seems that during the 60s and 70s these shoes were worn by the people who hadn't enough money to but fancier training shoes. That is, if you were a cool, rich person, you'd not wear those -at least in Spain. So he just can't understand the trend nor the price of the shoes now. Maybe he's right to some extent. If you watch this Grease video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c48Ol9xkaqM , John Travolta is wearing leather shoes while the 'working boys' are wearing the cons!
