Do you do humour?

The winter holidays seem to bring out more fashion silliness (Christmas sweaters, Santa hats, reindeer antler headbands, tree ornaments as earrings) than other times of the year - although there is Halloween, and Valentines. Any ‘holiday’ for that matter is an opportunity for a bit of sartorial license. Of course one can wear one’s feline or canine love on ones sleeve - literally. There is humour in the irony of twisting a slogan or spoofing a popular image, too. Fashion funnies can be bold or subtle, slap stick or subversive.

Is there room in your closet (and on your body) for humour?

Well I prefer to be funny in speech rather than in clothing, but don't mind a subtle sartorial snicker if one occurs to me .

I'm not a very good person with themed dressing eg wearing team shirts as a supporter, or even company polo shirts, or holiday humour clothes or jewelry for example.

I might wear something red to a Christmas party....... that's about the extent of it.

Oh sure! There’s my Xmas wrapping paper OppoSuit, my Hella Kitty tee, and a lot of cat socks. Oh! And my Free Martha tee - that’s one of the best ever.

Actually, you know, they’re like letters of introduction: instant social connections.

Not humour but more whimsy and for everyday not just special occasions! Hello Kitty, West Highland White Terriers, Alice in Wonderland and animals feature in my wardrobe. I wear these one piece at a time rather than all at once.

Like Rachy, I find items like this are conversation starters and are a bit of fun. I love Harajuku Japanese sub-culture, which is why Hello Kitty features prominently in my collection.

I don't do festive jewellery or earrings, for me that is one step too far!

I do more whimsy in my ordinary style vs. holiday style. But I'm not above humour! Some of it is subtle. Certain pattern mixes read as amusing to me. Most people might not see them!

Hmmm. Not holiday themed (but my family goes all out for Halloween or any excuse to wear costumes).

Humor-wise, I had a thing for silly socks for years…. Still have some fun ones.
Also, in a previous life I was a usability designer. This ‘Helvetica’ t (in comic sans font) still makes my inner nerd giggle. Angie posted a sweatshirt I loved last year that said ‘INDOORSY’ on it that I nearly bought. I’m all for a little fun!

I apparently have zero sense of humour with regards to dressing . You will not catch me anywhere near any themed anything . No way . I have a sweet spot for pretty holiday pins on elderly ladies , and appreciate the beauty they radiate . I however remain clean of holiday or character themed detritus .

You may find me in themed pajamas, and that’s about it. Oh, and I do have some fun socks — pugs, sushi, fish…but they aren’t visible in my outfits. I don’t enjoy wearing themed or whimsical items — I’ll leave them to others who enjoy it.

I don’t have anything like that. I would wear something whimsical if I come across such thing. For now my humor goes as far as wearing fishnets with oxfords

I dress strictly for my own amusement. I have a few pieces of jewelry, socks, a couple of handbag charms, some tees that tickle my personal fancy or funny bone.

I enjoy the festive spirit on others!

No holiday or thematic dressing for me either. Animals or cute are not my cup of tea. Only thing I might consider is a bit of lurex in a sock peeking out of the top of combat boots. Big no from me too for Christmas earrings!

Well, as I thrift a lot and wear "outdated" clothes, I guess the humor aspect comes in by default. One has to have a sense of humor about it. Ironic distancing? Is that the term? Yes, this is a grandma jacket, I am quite aware, but am rocking it anyway.

I have also noticed that the funny comes into play, whether I mean to or not. Maybe it's part of being a Gen X'er, nothing is ever taken seriously, everything is ironic or double ironic. I hate that actually. Sometimes I want to dress "proper and pretty", and not in a tounge-in-cheek aren't I hilarious- way.

In dressing, as in social media posting, there’s likely to be a wink in anything from me, or at least a playful half-grin. But that derives from how I combine things, not from adding a “haha funny” item to an otherwise staid outfit. Novelty items like reindeer antlers feel the same to me as too much juxtaposition—forced and like I’m boorishly calling for attention. I don’t mind those items existing, wouldn’t call them trash—as long as they don’t get thrown into the waste bin at the end of the season, but they aren’t “me”.

Synne, I hadn’t made that connection between age cohorts and style that you point out, but it is so true! As a gen-x-er who just squeaked under the line (if I’d been born in Germany, I would’ve been a boomer), I’m often amazed at how sharp the dividing line is over a short span of time.

I'm firmly on team nope too! The one exception is the ugly sweater that I bought for my work party. When I change jobs it's going right in the donation bin! I did see some that said "Let it snow....somewhere else" - which fits my mood better than the one I have.

There are also a couple of shirts I liked at the Tubman musuem (I think). One said "Nope" ~ Rosa Parks and the other "We Out" ~ Harriet Tubman. I probably wouldn't wear them, but they made me smile!

I vaguely remember a pre-pandemic post on alternatives to the “ugly” sweater. Part of the conversation went to praise of the actual attractiveness of those sweaters, while another subthread was about what else one could wear to an “ugly sweater” Christmas party without buying into them, but also without being a grinch. Time to revive that thread?

I don't have anything that falls into that category, I need my clothes to work all season and not just for a couple of weeks but I'm not opposed to them in general.

I can go with some amusing clothing. Socks are a good example. I have some socks with birds, foxes, reindeer, and flowers. All worn to coordinate with outfits, of course. My favorite pair in that category has words: “Cute but Psycho… But Cute”

Tshirts are a good way to display humor if I can find the right one, but that’s rare. Best to be subtle, dry, wry, and/or connected to my interests, and not too unconventional in design or color. I have a dark charcoal gray one with a line drawing in green of cactus plants, and the words “Free Hugs” with an arrow pointing to the left, meaning ask the next person. It makes me chuckle. I also had a very cool Chicago shirt with lots of tiny drawings of city landmarks, the lake and silly people, and colorful embroidery around the neckline. I wish it hadn’t worn out. Another example I loved was my daughter’s with a cartoon of a painting and a couch that said “good art does not match your sofa”.

Frankly, I consider my colorful Converse tennis shoes as humor. They make me smile and hopefully others also.

Hard pass on humor and whimsy. I don’t even buy twee pajamas, and will cheerily give you my No Twee Sheep list of twee free pajama designers. I also hate dressing up for Halloween.

Not for me either. I and DH and the kids do have some Santa hats that we wear every once in a while if we are hosting the family Christmas party but that is about it.

I’m not opposed to whimsy, but wearing outright jokes isn’t my go-to. I do have a pair of “Poe-ka dot” socks that make me laugh every time, though. Printed with Edgar Allan Poe heads.

I have one humor/whimsy piece in my closet. I took it out for a spin three or four years ago, and nobody knew how to react. I think people weren't sure if I was being serious or comical. It was amusing to me, watching my friends try to suss out my motives behind the piece.

I used to wear some items with a bit of humor when I was younger but now, I have the humor level of a cinder block. I do have one item with a bit of whimsy that I like to wear and it's my Scottie dog sweater.

Oh, I do have little Baltimore Orioles earrings. Worn only to playoff games. Needless to say, they’ve been gathering dust for some time.

I have been known to sport a whimsical or humorous knit piece or two. The J Crew "French hen" with the beret is the best! Visual pun!

I have had some graphic tees too, but those are hard to fit on me, especially from tee shirt companies rather than womenswear brands. My torso is too short, so the graphics end up in the wrong place and the bottom is always too tight. The only example I have from Finds is a Mandalorian Christmas tee with a pun.

No holiday or themed public-facing stuff for me though I do have my fav Check Me-owt sleep tee (from a feral rescue group I supported) and a couple of other cat themed sleep tees.
