Let out the hem and wear these pants? PPL pedants, please pipe up.

Please look past the knock knees that make every pair of pants get camel toe if I try to stand straight.
I love the detailing at the waist, and the fact that they are “fancy” velvet in a casual, jeans-type cut. They are the perfect color and weight for the Florida fall capsule I’m working on. But are they worth rehemming, or are they too old/out of shape?

If I keep them, what kind of shoes should I pair them with? So far the capsule has flat loafers and 2” booties in a blushy color they’d go well with. My flat oxfords might work too.

To my eye they look too short. I love the idea of velvet pants but I'm not sure these are the ones.

I used to wear them with cowboy boots, can’t remember if I tucked them into the boots or not. Maybe I could tuck them into booties or pull out the cowboy boots.

Or I could let them out an inch or so.

I'd vote to pass them on. They're looking somewhat worn around the knees, and that type of fabric is not going to let out well at the hem. (It looks like there will be wear and stitching lines in the fabric when you open it up.)

They look too short to me. You could narrow them into skinnies and then the length would be okay. It's a fairly easy bit of tailoring.

I like Sara’s idea of narrowing the side seam into skinnies. I like the fabric and colour.

I’m on my phone so not able to take a really close look, but upon my first impression, I’m seeing the same thing Liz is seeing. They look a bit worn to me.

I would let them go. Liz made good points about the fabric. Also, they seem too wide to tuck into boots.

I’ve seen comments to the effect of “if you’re asking, you probably already know the answer” on YLF before. Sigh. I think that’s what happening here, darn it. I have really liked those pants, off and on. I bought them on a big shopping expedition after my son was born. I was hoping they were having a moment, just once more, with the color and the velvet and all, but you all are probably right about the fabric looking worn and the likelihood that letting out the hem would leave a line that would be hard to get rid of. Away they go. Boohoo.

I get told off for having stuff from 2010 in my wardrobe Fashiontern! And I think your son's older than 7. I only have a few items that predate 2010- the Mondi jersey, one pair 1996 booties, my mother's 1964 coat, one tartan ( plaid) shirt. It's not the age alone but whether they look worn out. Which, sorry, I think these do.
If it makes you feel any better, I got rid of similar dark green velvety corduroy pants from about 2006 this year or last. I miss their colour( a Kari dark green) but they really were dated and I'm overall pleased they're gone.

Be strong and then treat yourself to a new pair if you want velvet pants or something else new as a reward for letting these go. After all , you have an empty hangar to fill.

I like the fabric, but I think you could do better with a more modern pair. And as Liz says, the fabric will not allow for letting out the hem without there being an indication of such.

I will be doing a closet edit soon, and I will be giving up stuff that is hard to part with as well. It can be tough to move on, but move on we must!

If you love them so much, maybe you could chop off the worn part and make a pair of bermudas/shorts out of them? (says the sentimental one, who can never get rid of anything ... ) . No, don't listen to me, I know that the best rational solution is get rid of them and get something new.

Joy, you temptress! No, I don't get to automatically fill the hanger. I want to cut my wardrobe down to a third to half its current size.

Sisi, you are a temptress too!! I'm always trying to find lovely reuses for things, but not often succeeding. I once gave my nephew blocks in a bag made from cutoff jeans. His dad said "as he took it out of the box, I wondered why you were sending my boy hot pants". Oy. I wouldn't send hot pants to a girl either.

If they fit in well with your capsule I think you should keep them. The cut is classic enough for a boyfriend fit, and I think they'd look fine with any of those shoes and a more polished topper (satin bomber? dressy blazer?)

It's hard to tell from here whether they're really worn out, or just, y'know, jeans. They look fine to me but velvet doesn't always wear well and anyway I have a high tolerance for wear and tear. I do know how hard it is to get rid of a favourite pair of velvet pants, but I think you'll know if it's really time bid them farewell.

If you like them enough to want to keep them, there's no harm in trying a few simple alterations. Released hems are trendy around here, but if that doesn't appeal maybe try pin-cuffing them?

Approprio, maybe I’ll keep them just for this season, as I’m hoping to lose more weight and am reluctant to buy anything in this size (but have already given away several things that would fit me now). What is pin-cuffing?

Yeah, I think that would be my approach - get one more season out of them while deciding where to go next. They're nice pants.
