Do I need a moto...

I can make Angie's pearls and stripes ensemble... except for the moto. My favourite tall shop has one, and on sale this weekend... Do I need it?

We have a short mild winter here, but I will be travelling to colder cities a bit this year so do need something
I already have the white leather Danier bomber jacket and a black jersey waterfall cardigan with leather sleeves from about 3 years ago and din't wear them much last year
It could sit over my corporate gear and work for casual, travelling etc.
Black is practical but also boring
Should I get it? If not, what else might I consider

It doesn't sound like you "need" it. Here are some questions I ask myself that help me make a final decision:

Can I pay cash for it?
Will this new article mean that something else won't get worn?
Do I care that I won't be wearing that other item?

I think the white bomber would work quite well with Angie's ensemble from today. A blazer would also work if you wear those. I don't really think of motos as a proper outer layer; I have one heavier moto which I bought for that purpose that rarely gets worn, whereas the lighter pairs get a ton of wear with a heavier coat overtop (or no coat if it's warmer out). As for color, FWIW motos are a staple wardrobe item for me and I do not have one in black

EDIT: I do have a silvery charcoal, though!

I agree with Aida - and heartily agree that a moto jacket isn't an outerwear piece, per se. Well, not in winter anyways. I have a few, and all are black, and only one is heavier in weight and could be an outerwear piece. It gets worn the least ....

I finally got a black moto this Christmas, and it's insanely useful. I think it goes with everything I own. So I vote yes -- I didn't realize how much I "needed" a black moto jacket until I owned one.

(btw black is not boring, at least as far as moto jackets are concerned -- it's classic).

I have one which I wear in spring and fall, but it's too cold (and short) for winter and too heavy to wear inside. It's a classic piece for sure, so if you buy it it'll last for years.
I was about to say what Aida suggested, to recreate Angie's outfit with a blazer - I think I'll do it myself.
Sterling's questions are a good starting point to take a final decision, I think.

Echoing... I have a moto that I love, but don't wear much. I wish it were lighter in weight. Even when comfortable, it looks a little strange indoors.

As I recall, you're in Queensland so a moto jacket in winter should be perfect.

Ditto what chirico said, black moto is classic. Since I don't work in an office my moto gets a break during winter. I also layer it over a sweater and add gloves and scarf as the weather dictates. I love mine.

Yeah, I didn't think I needed one until I found a good one. It's much more useful than I thought it would be. I wear it mainly as a mid layer over a shirt or fine knit and under a shawl, poncho, wrap or whatever in colder weather.

I find my moto jackets very versatile. Sometimes they work as outerwear, sometimes they're outfit completers... Just depends on the weather and what I'm doing that day.

Surprisingly, I've been getting more wear out of my white, grey, and blue moto jackets than my black ones. But I've figured out my black jackets had either very specific uses (very cropped length only works well with certain outfits) or had fit or style issues (one had tight arms that always drove me nuts so I sold it). I would consider getting a new black moto at some point, in a slightly easier fit to enable more layering options.

Gigi, my moto is technically outerwear, but it works really well for indoors too, as it's lightweight lamb leather that doesn't feel bulky or heavy. I was very picky about fit, though. The sleeves had to be fitted but not constricting (see what Janet said about her moto with tight arms!) and it had to be streamlined -- i.e. no heavy, flappy collar or over-the-top hardware. Also, it fits perfectly across the shoulders and chest. Mind you, I don't think I ever actually close it.

I have just bought one in black but it has been too hot to wear yet.
It does seem to go with most so I really have high hopes for it.
I don't think black is boring, but the best choice if you are like me and only intend to own one leather jacket.

Thank you Angie and everyone... I just hit buy so guess I will receive it in a few weeks from the UK. The reviews were so good so I have great hopes. Yes Gingko I am in Queensland and even with trips to colder states it will mainly between 0 and 10 celcius so... I am glad I bought it. There was a red which has sold out in every size over the weekend.

I am late to this post - but living in Australia, I find my black leather moto is very useful in Autumn through to Spring. This looks to be a great addition to your wardrobe!

Although it only comes out occasionally in the fall and spring, I have a burgundy moto from H&M that looks so chic and is lots of fun to wear. Enjoy yours!
