Do I need a leopard coat? ETA pic my winter coats

Please talk me out of my silly obsession with this faux fur coat. I've been back and forth on this coat since I first saw it in Sept. Now it's discounted with 50% so the price is about 45 US $.

I don't need it. Leopard pattern is not really my thing (but love it on others). I like solids, floral, stripes, dots, colour blocking. On belts and shoes I can handle the occational snake/snake embossed pattern. Why do I keep coming back to this faux fur baby?

ETA: pic #2 shows my collection of winter coats. I don't see any that duplicates the leopard in regards to shape and length. It will probably be a mid thigh length on me as I'm ca 5'1 (157 cm).

Could I think of the leopard coat as a substitute for a peacoat? A peacoat has been on my wish list forever, but these days I think a classic navy one would bore me. It's a real bonus that the leopard can go both dressy and casual.

I have no answers for you, so my apologies for that. I also can't tell you whether or not you NEED this.

What I can tell you is that I think you should get it. If you've been wanting it for that long, it's a sign that you might really want it. It's a sin that you might ought to get it. It's pretty cool, and could punch up an outfit of neutrals. It's also just appropriate for parties or just feeling a bit glam, which pretty much sums up holiday season to me.

Thanks, cindysmith! I'm sure I don't NEED it. I have plenty of other winter coats (dressy and casual). My party life is active.... in my imaginary lifestyle. Glam has never been part of my style, although I like Kate Moss and her casual/glam style.

I really want to figure out why I like this coat (besides being an affordable experiment).

Why? Because leopard print coats are classic. The question is not whether you should buy this, it's why do you not have one yet?

I think of leopard as a neutral and wear it as such. I have a leopard puffer and a full length coat and love and wear both often. I am a yes vote on this one.

Just consider if settling this obsession is worth 45. If so, do it now while it’s on sale. But make sure it really fits the bill for flattery and fit. If not, you’ll keep mentally searching, and the purchase will have been in vain.

Bijou, I see what you mean. But in my mind leopard feels very loud, much louder than a bright hot pink scarf.

You have a bold style Harmonica, even if it isn’t usually with leopard print. I do not see this as more bold than bright colors. Leopard goes with so many things.

I have also noticed I get so many compliments when I wear leopard or similar. Others seem drawn to it.

If it were me, I'd say yes IF I would commit to one other accessory that has the same vibe. Maybe leopard shoes, or tortoise shell earrings, or something that settles in with it, not even to wear at the same time. Then I know if it's a direction I want to explore or just a one off crazy idea.

FWIW, I bought a leopard blouse that I ended up wearing a lot more than expected, and leopard isn't really my thing either. I liked it with some tortoise hoops I picked up to go with it (sadly ruined, replaced with black glass earrings). And I had plenty of black and denim to make it work.

Also, what accessories do you see wearing with the coat? Black scarf & gloves? Red, olive, royal blue? Any would be smashing, but do you have them and are you willing to spend to fill out the capsule?

If you've been thinking about it that long, you've probably come up with some outfits for it, or at least been looking at how other people wear this pattern (I think it's become a neutral somehow). If it is well made and fits you well, then try on some of those outfits. If you can see yourself wearing them, and will go out the door in at least one now, then it's a go.

Ps. Does style evolution have to be logically decided? Maybe you just pulled yourself in a new direction, like Angie's goof purchase of burgandy footwear.

Hmmm.....only you can figure out why you want it. But you seem to be
coming up with valid points as to why it's not for you. Like, it's
"loud". I like leopard as well but in smaller accessories.
Is it the leopard print that you're more attracted to or the faux fur?

I got this Teddy Bear Coat at BR recently and I'm loving it. I almost didn't
keep it because I thought maybe it was kind of silly. But, it's
ridiculously cozy and fairly warm. Not serious winter warm but I've
worn it below 0 Celsius with a sweater and was warm. I get multiple
positive comments every time I wear it which is great validation.
It's a fun piece and different from anything else in my closet. Currently 50% off with the BR black Friday sale.

Do I have something else in the same vibe? No, but I do have lots of black and some burgundy and taupe that would go well with it.

I have a black scarf that I def would wear it with. Or a hot pink scarf (eh... speaking of loud accessories) and leave the rest of the outfit black.

I def see it as a casual MOTG coat, like grocery shopping, stepping it up from my usual parka or athletic coat.

I try to be more conscious about my style evolution so that my wardrobe doesn't spill over.

Is it the leopard print or faux fur? I'm attracted to the fluffy part of the faux fur. I can't stand mohair, but I think faux fur would be fun. I'm very ambivalent about the print. I partly assosiates it with showing off in a Kim K kind of way (not so good, IMO), partly with costume dress-up and partly as a classic updated cool rocker chic vibe.

And well, $45 is not too much for a fun test ride. However, I'm drawn to the idea of a strict and coherent wardrobe (maybe another fantasy that should be left as a fantasy)

I would never try to talk anyone out of a faux fur coat. I've had a few over the years, and this is a good time to wear one.

I'll play devil's advocate and propose a thought experiment: if you had to get rid of a coat to make way for this one, which would it be?

I didn't mean to say style evolution had to be intentional. Angie's burgundy shoes were completely unintentional, but by embracing their color, she has shifted her style a bit. If you want to plan your entire course, that's certainly fine, but I think there is a place for random happenstance and whimsy.

ETA: I just saw that you live in Norway. Based on posts throughout the year by Swedish friends in Uppsala, Gothenburg, and Oslo, I say buy the coat!

A day doesn’t go by that I don’t miss my snow leopard skirt and my leopard shoes are workhorses. Every wardrobe needs some leopard. At $45 you can test your love (and tolerance) for the print. 10 wears = $4.50 per. If that coat was in my closet I would start by wearing it paired with faded jeans and red cons for grocery shopping this weekend, and then to the Santa Clause parade and lunch out with trousers and booties. I think it would be fab over a pencil skirt and high boots too.

It seems the perfect blend of ‘what every woman should have in her closet’ and wackadoodle!

I'm not the best at this, considering I pretty much buy what I want. However, for a winter coat, $45 is not a huge investment, especially if this is something you've wanted. Leopard print is quite timeless and neutral.

It has been my experience that if I keep coming back to an item, there is a reason for it, and if the price is right, I need to go the next step and purchase it. You will know more once you see the coat on. Sometimes purchases like this, which are outside our usual style, can be the most satisfying.
