These sweaters have given me permission to wear my favorite sweaters that have seen better days.....So I am kind of milking the trend.
As a knitter coming from a family of knitters we would have been sad to have something so moth eaten and gone to great lengths to fix it or recycle it somehow. Now I can add "proudly wearing" to my repair kit.
I do also like the artful mending trend and the color of this sweater would lend itself well to that art form (if one was able to find it on the free table at a second hand store that is)

There is a gentleman in the Netherlands who literally spends weeks and months artistically repairing moth eaten sweaters. So I admit I find the concept of this sweater kind of odd. I find something lovely about distressed items, especially if they're distressed by real life wear. Where there is a story, memories, and love behind it.
