So I went shopping on Sunday over in Bellevue.. Mostly to look for shirts, specifically turtlenecks to wear under that open plaid dress. FYI JCrew tissue turtlenecks are WAY overpriced for what they truly are. Nordstrom pretty much had zip.
I did make it to Uniqlo, theirs are great, unfortunately they didn't have white in my size. I did find an OK white one at the GAP.
Anyways in my meandering throughout the mall I stopped in Aritzia. I wanted another chunky wool sweater because we're finally in winter and I'm a bit of alternating between the two I have.
I got the heather hickory, it's a great interesting dark brown with a white-silver contrast. Color was good for me and I loved the style.

But when I got home, it really didn't go with any of my jeans colors. Dark wash, acid washes (light blue and brown-black), faded grey-black.
Also they have a very short return window, only 10 days for full return; 21 days for store credit.
I just think it might be too much trouble to make it work.

When you say it won't go, how won't go?

I think I'd need to see it with the jeans because it sounds like it should go with most of them. And clicking through it looks like it should go. (The light blue acid wash with all the texture in the sweater may be really really contrasty without any scale contrast to break it up--but if anyone could pull it off and look fab, it would be you.)

That's gorgeous. On my screen it resolves to a dark taupe or charcoal brown. In my life that kind of color goes with practically everything.
Although some blended colors are what I think of as Not-colors. Something Not-gray and yet Not-brown. If you put this kind of thing with gray, it brings out the brown but often in a weird way. And vice versa. It looks as though it could go with both palettes and goes with neither. I wear stuff like this - that I have a passion for - with a totally different 3d color and then it works.

Hold it in your hand and run it across your closet and see what looks like it would work with the sweater.

model has it going on with a shade of grey pants. Oyster white would probably work. Got any pewter metallic? Chocolate patent leather?
Often if you use a totally different texture with some muscle to it, items knuckle under and look intentional.

Do you have colored bottoms? Might be a difficult item to go all-neutral with. If you can't easily match, then I'd return. It's beautiful, though, so even if you have only one good match it could be worth keeping.

Well, I'd have to see it with the jeans to be sure, but my guess is: not cool and not warm, not dark but also not light. Those types of marled yarns are tricky that way and can often look really busy. It would probably look OK with plain blue jeans of any shade but not particularly intentional, unless you happen to have dark taupe shoes?

It would also probably work with white/cream.

Yes my thoughts were black, cream, red/wine, maybe olive...I can see that blacks and greys often tend to the cool though and it might not work. It is a great top but for sure return it if you can't think of a way to wear it.

I think with a marled yarn like that I'd need a very punchy solid-colored bottom; so not most denim unless a very consistent wash -- like a super dark rinse or solid black. I think it would look nice with cords or chinos -- eggplant, evergreen, cobalt, navy?

I actually don't particularly like how it's styled on the model w/ the tweed pants -- little too busy and muted.

I wish I was wearing that sweater right now, I'm freezing today. It looks warm, soft, and cozy and I love the chunky oversized styling. But, if you don't have a pair of denim that 'works' with it I say return.

The sweater is gorgeous, and I love the color. Geez, it never occurred to me that there were colors that didn't go with denim. I will take your word for it, though, because I trust your judgment.
Would you consider exchanging it for the cream? If so, you might be able to do the transaction over the phone with the store, ask them to hold it for you, and buy yourself a little time for the return of the one you have.

I love the sweater!
Pics might help but I hear you on "neutral" items that don't seem to actually go with anything, surprisingly, or that are too particular.
I actually have that problem with some gray items; of course they go with solid black or navy.
And sometimes cool browns, which I love, do that very thing. Agree a very dark rinse denim, so looking navy, might work but then may not be versatile enough.

I have done returns for that very reason--something turns out to be too fussy about its partners, when the style ought to be easy-toss-on & go.
Very frustrating.

It's really hard to imagine this sweater doesn't work with denim! Can you post pics? It's really so gorgeous and it looks like it would work beautifully!!! But, if you're not feeling it, maybe it should go back.

That is a stunning sweater and I can imagine how amazing it will look on you.

I think I agree with Vildy. In theory it should work with everything but these taupes-grey-browns sometimes fail to work as easily as they ought to. However, I know for sure that I would wear that one with:

Dark wash denim.
Medium wash denim.
Black.
Cream/ white.

I might also try it with navy or other greys but I know that would be iffy. I definitely wouldn't wear it with light wash denim or acid wash. I often find those light washes weirdly clash with this type of mixed heathery knit.

I recently got a v neck jersey in a very similar color. The brand calls it "bean." I am wearing it today with a large black fringe cardi and olive corduroy crops.

As if this sweater needs anymore love...I love it too. What was off about the match with the faded brown-black jeans? I would definitely wear it with a mid-wash denim, winter white, black, olive and maybe burgundy. Pictures!

I'd wear it with all the denim washes you mention (although faded black can be similar to grey and have warm or cool tones).

Anna, I think it is a lovely sweater but if it doesn't work for you with your current bottoms, then why waste time and effort trying to force it? You have a lot of fabulous pieces in your wardrobe. No need to settle for anything that doesn't make you itch to wear it out.

I thought the same thing as Diana. I can see it with a fairly uniform light wash denim, cream or white. Black? Teal? I do like it. I tried sow thing similar but with more colors from Anthro and decided it was too droopy and shapeless on me, but I like the vibe of this style.

Like others, I thought of white or cream - olive, red, and maybe black leather? Do you have anything in a brown or grey tweed? Silver?

Ohhh I have been eyeing that sweater!! And a lot of other sweaters they have but we do not have a store here. I would love to see a pic. I agree with the others that have mentioned marled yarns being hard to match. I would want a sweater like that to look good with jeans.

Id suggest
trying with your dark wash jeans but it sounds like you already tried that.

I am among the members that suggested if you have to force it to go with your existing wardrobe, return it. Life is too short and why bother?

Ok, so my uniform dark blue skinnies or true black skinnies, it's ok, but honestly then it's jeans and sweater. Something with absolutely no forethought.
I don't have any colored bottoms.
It does go with my raw-ish denim cropped jeans and my faded blue Marni x Current Elliott boyfriend jeans that have a tuxedo stripe of grey wool and brown leather piping. But like many of you understand, it's too cold for exposed ankles now. Or I could figure out some kinda sock which will work colorwise, but that's more work. I do have some medium-dark R13 skinnies that also work color wise, but I can't get them past mid thigh.
I think I may have to return it.

I support you in returning it. It sounds like there is so much effort in figuring out how to pair it that it is killing all the joy that you'd feel in wearing it. (Aside: Diana's post totally reminded me that I have unrecognized issues with marled yarns. I love the idea of them. I love the look of them in skeins. I love them knitted up. But I don't love wearing them. Not at all. At best, I will get a month's worth of joy from them before the disgust sets in. But that's me.) See Anna? Your conflict has resulted in my clarity. No marled yarns for me. Nope. Wanna form a club?
