I am not even sure where to begin. Apparently someone posted some nasty things under my account. Greg and Mochi were both great in helping straighten it out. And now I have a new account.

I was really touched by the number of you that sent personal emails to my home account saying that I was posting things that didn't "sound" like me and they were "suspicious". Unfortunately, I think that I know who did it but most unfortunate is that I wasn't too careful with my password ( which happened to be the same one for my Evernote account...to which this person got into also. It was not a family member. And I cannot be 100% sure....but I have a very strong suspicion ). For that , I am very sorry and apologize to everyone.

I am glad you got your account back! I was going to write you because this person did not seem like you.

Isabel, you don't have anything to apologize for! I'm a little sickened to think that you think you know who this is. I always think of hackers as anonymous people floating around out there, nameless, faceless. You must feel terribly violated and I'm so sorry this happened to you! You are the last person to deserve something like this as you are nothing but kind to everyone. Please accept some virtual hugs! <<<<HUGS>>>>

Thanks Ceit. I don't know. They got into my Evernote account. But I was stupid enough to have the same password for both. Weirdly, there was a log into my iCloud too. I cannot really figure out what they were trying to do except cause trouble. Per Greg's suggestion, I changed all my usernames and passwords on everything that I have early this afternoon. I panicked about my banking stuff. So I have a security alert to my phone via text now.

Claire and Adelfa, I don't know how I feel. At first I panicked. Then I was so sad. Now I feel a little numb. I am not sure how to feel. It makes no sense to me. I am also unsure of how to handle it because I didn't see the site up on the computer, but it all fits from what Greg told me and the times at which it happened.

Claire, I feel somewhat responsible because I used a very easy password and I used it on two accounts which enabled this person to then use mine.

Ugh, what a terrible thing. I hope you are able to confirm who did this to you. And a forum like this is where I would have least expected to see something like this. I know this forum doesn't generally ban users, but if you can confirm hacking onto your account from a member, I hope that step would be taken to ensure the safety of everyone. And the posts very much did not sound like you, but I didn't know you well enough to feel comfortable pointing anything out.

Oh Echo, it wasn't another member. It was someone that I let use my computer for some "work" ( I am pretty sure of that now ). It is also someone that knows that I like YLF, because I talk about it.

I think that they thought this was funny. Honestly, I don't know what to think. Either way, everything is locked down now.

Most definitely no need to apologize at all, Isabel! It really isn't your fault, no matter how easy your password was. No decent person should have done that to you. It's especially puzzling to have it happen here, isn't it? I also did a double take when I read that post under your name, because it most definitely did NOT sound like you. I hope you don't have to deal with that person ever again. Hugs!

Oh, Isabel, how upsetting and scary! I don't think I saw any of the suspicious posts and have always seen you as your gracious self, but this must be disturbing on so many levels. Security, a sense of misused identity -- ugh!!

I am so glad it wasn't another member, but how awful to have to deal with a "friend" who would think being rude in someone else's name is okay. I am glad you got the issue resolved here, though.

Echo and Debora, I think that the worst part for me is that I am a bit paranoid now. I HATE that. But I also need to face the truth, I wasn't careful. And that is on me.

You don't have to apologize, Isabel. You've been the victim of a rather nasty "prank" from someone you obviously trusted.

I was also dumbfounded when I read the comment that was published under your name. I think it speaks volumes that we've become so familiar with each person's "voice" on the forum that alarm bells immediately go off when something like this happens. I'm glad that Greg and Mochi were able to help you sort things out so quickly and know that we are all happy to have you back.

Well, I must have missed it - but still - what a stressful thing! Glad you got it all fixed up, and I agree with Gaylene. Pretty nice that people can 'tell' if you're posting something that doesn't seem like you.

A lesson for us all here, I too am guilty of using a password for multiple accounts......something I am about to change now.
I understand how upset you must be feeling, especially when it is someone that you know who has abused your trust.

I did not see your posts, but it doesn't sound like any harm was done. Cool that everyone knew it wasn't you!

I also use the same password on many accounts-----I'm not sure how to avoid it; how could I remember lots of different passwords and login names.

Any suggestions on how to manage remembering all these passwords?

I try and have a core string on my password and then change the prefix with something to do with the site I am logging in to.

So my passwords would be something like:

nordies$724PasswordString
youlookfab$724PasswordString
etc.

I change up the core password every once in a while, but always try and have numbers and capital letters in it.

As to the passwords, I have some that I manage like Ceit does, and also have an account that is a secure login where all passwords or clues to them are listed. It is astounding how many passwords a household needs to function today and what havoc is created when you have to change many of them, which should be done periodically.

Oh dear - how horrid for you. I have my machine time out within seconds of no activity. Also like others mentioned you can use an app that stores account passwords and it is very secure. I use LastPass.

Oh no! I totally missed any posts that the hacker made, but I'm glad it's sorted out.

Last year my website got hacked and it caused me a lot of stress and time having someone help me fix the security issues (one of the reasons I'm redoing my site and taking it off Wordpress). Some kid in the Middle East, believe it or not. Like, why me? Why hack the site of an artist?

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Makes you feel violated, I know.
