desperate for some layering tops

I have a HUGE, gaping hole in my wardrobe that needs filling. I've got some great sweaters and jackets that are screaming for layering tops that are machine washable. Unfortunately, the amount of time I have to shop is practically nil. So I'm hoping you'll serve as my scouts. If you could visit only one store for layering top shopping, where would you go?

This is me too, Alecia! I have a lot of fab jackets and cardis, and I find them easy to buy. But I have only one or two tops that work under them. Finding the right colors, neckline, fabric and style seem to be an impossible task...

I like Ann Taylor Loft. They have a lot of blouses, tanks and t-shirt style tops with interesting details - bows, ruffle, trim, etc. They also have some with prints. Most are machine washable. I hang them to dry.

I've got the same wardrobe gap. I've had luck recently at Macy's but everything I've found has been polyester. Do you want sleeved or sleeveless?

Will cami's work? They are great under cardigans and jackets, but dont create any bulk...there are a multitude of prints, solids and lacy ones at different price points....

I think that Ann Taylor is a great place for layering tops because they tend to have a variety of necklines, often have interesting features on their tops (like ruching or embellishments), have different sleeve lengths, and carry some prints. I'm also a big fan of their basic seamless cami, which is great for layering (although I am not as in love with this season's colors I have been in the past).

I second the Loft for layering tops, and want to add H&M if you need some inexpensive basics. I depended on them for winter layering tops but I haven't stocked up for summer yet. Taking care of this hole in my wardrobe has given me so many more outfits to choose from! Good luck!

Angie, mostly work but I could use tops for both.

Dani, I'm thinking sleeveless since they'd be the most versatile. I will admit, though, that I'm frequently cold so sleeves have some appeal.

Biscuitsmom, I don't really think that camis alone would work for me. I've been doing nursing camis lately but I feel too exposed. When I'm not breastfeeding anymore, I don't think it's a look I'd continue.

I second the vote for Ann Taylor. I also have found some great Halogen tops at Nordstrom's. They're a good price point - even better when they go on sale. Most of them are sleeveless, so they're great for layering under jackets, cardi's, etc. If you have a Rack near you, I would also suggest looking there. I bought the one pictured below in ivory (looks like the other colors are gone now.)
