Denim Vest Project #1 - YouLookFab Forum

I went to my favourite thrift store today deliberately to see if I could find a denim vest - and I think I might have, with some tailoring.

It gets very hot here in the summer so I was thinking I would prefer a denim vest that did not have a collar - just holds in the heat on the back of my neck too much. This one has no collar, is a nice light weight stretch denim, underarm holes fit properly (sometimes an issue for me) and I like the frayed edges. The fit is fabulous as it is - I hope that shows in the photos...but it's too long. However, I think I could take it to Wonder Woman and have her crop it and fray the bottom to match. I have very crudely pinned it and I know it's not quite at the right length - I have it too short here (I would choose the same length as my light wash denim jacket) but it gives you an idea.

Is this worth exploring?

It's worth a try. I love my faded denim vest so much for a third layer in hot weather that i really want a white version for when I'd normally wear a white denim jacket. I'm hoping to find a white jacket at the thrift store or on deep discount that might be made into a vest.

I think it would look great cropped! Didn't Una just successfully crop a vest? Seems like it should be an easy alteration.

It will work when vest cropped, but honestly, I loved the dress as in it's own very much, too! Great colour and a but different print never hurts!:-)

I wouldn't take too much off the length though give that this doesn't look like a boxy fit, more tailored. Maybe to the point where your middle fingers sit in #1? Or does that seem too long to work with the outfits you have in mind?

I think the length of your cropped denim jacket would be perfect for this vest!

Lyn - I like the dress on its own too but would like other options on how to wear it and think a vest could be the ticket!

Manidipa - I agree, the vest is more tailored than the typical boxy denim vest. I'll ask Wonder Woman to pin it just at my high hip so that I can still have the curve of the vest. I love Una's cropped vest but agree that my vest would not look good at that short length.

Sarah - yes, I am done thrifting for a while but have mentioned a denim vest a couple of times so really did want to see if I could find one because I knew I didn't want the "typical" denim vest.

Sveta - yep, aiming for the same length as my denim jacket!

I really like the concept, Shannon. Clever!

Not entirely sold on the collarless style of this vest, though. The "cool factor" is missing - and it looks more twee. But it could work better over dresses that are less contrasting than this green one.

I think a collarless vest could work well over a collared shirt (or do they bother you in the heat too much?) too.

Angie - I didn't think about twee factor. Do you think that would be the case with any collarless vest? I'm not interested in putting money towards a vest re-do if I really should be looking for a more traditional denim vest. What are your thoughts?

My vote is for a collared style in order to cover all bases with one item.

But I will merely add...if the cost is low, it might be worth having two. Claire and I both have regular demin jackets and collarless ones, and wear both with delight.

I had a consignment jacket this fall that Angie worried would be too "twee" when I bought it. But the way I actually styled it, she gave it a thumbs up time after time (and I wore it a LOT).

Suz - good point about having two options.

Hmmm, I'm late to this thread, but what about having her change the shape of the bottom hem, since she's going to be shortening it? You could give it two points, a shirt tail hem, or even do a hi-lo hem. Do you think that might up the *cool* factor?
