Denim skirt possibility?

One wardrobe "staple" I have never had is a denim pencil skirt. I have a flouncy denim skirt that's close to 10 years old now (see here), but it's not quite the wardrobe classic is it?

Believe me I have tried on a TON, and they always look awful on me, accentuating the apple belly, and never seeming to be the right length (too long or too short). I have a similar problem with pencil skirts in other fabric, but the combination of stiffer denim and a front zip always seems to make it much worse with denim skirts.

One denim option that I've never tried on is a skirt with a back zip, rather than a front zip. Do you think this is likely to be more flattering on an apple figure?

Here's an example from Boden that I'm considering testing out. What do you think - worth giving a go, considering it's pretty $$$ and with international postage. Or should I just forget the whole pencil skirt idea?

I think you should definitely give it a try Tam! It looks very sleek and streamlined. AT had a fairly similar one recently and I have seen it look very flattering on pretty much everyone who wore it.

Actually I do think it would be more flatering with a back zipper or even lateral zipper.
Can't you find something locally?I know it sounds like a strange idea but do you have teenager kind of stores near you?As young girls usually don't have curves maybe the cut will be more pencil like in you(just a long shot, I admit).

fabrication is another factor. I love the dressy thinner denim and a back zipper myself. ATLOFT has one on sale now, I will try to post a link when i find:)

Drat, how did I miss AT's version!!! I have just looked on AT & the ATL website. This is the closest skirt I can find, but the zip is definitely in the front.

Celia, I have never seen a denim skirt here with a front or side zip. I have been on the lookout for a while though. If I don't crumble and order the Boden skirt, my hunt will continue!!!

That is a sleek lookin pencil skirt Taylor. Shame I missed it when it was available in regular sizes. I think it may have still been too short for what I'm looking for though. One of these days I'm just going to crumble and order the Boden skirt I think

The Boden one looks like it could be The One--dark neutral denim, good length, basic shape, and back zipper! I say go for it if you think it will really be a workhorse for you.

I never thought about zipper placement making a difference in a skirt... but it makes total sense. I struggle with trying to put a shirt on over my skirt and getting this big ole lump right there where the zipper is.
I think that Boden one could be a definite possibilily, but I hear you on the postage. Someone needs to open a store in Australia to resell stuff that people have bought but don't want to pay return shipping on.

Love the Boden one. I don't have a denim pencil skirt either, I used to wear pencil skirts to works and hated them LOL, but now I think it might have been fit / quality issues if anything (and a zipper in front, duh LOL). Oh, the times before YLF...

Tam, the boden one looks like a good possibility. I share the apple tendencies and I think a back zip is perfect!!! I much prefer that or a side zip to the bulky front zip. Also, I wanted to recommend that you look for a pencil skirt with a little bit of taper to it. Since you are staightish on the bottom (as I am too), I find that a slight taper gives a better shape and is more attractive. It's a little hard to tell on these Boden pics since the models are always posing and the pics are at an angle.

Tam, here's a JCrew denim pencil skirt I was stalking for a while: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../29179.jsp Meets all my criteria - dark denim, no visible seam stitching and back zipper. My current denim skirt is a very casual front zipper one from ON and I find front zippers add bulk no matter how streamlined the skirt is.

QM I love your idea of reselling international stuff that doesn't work here in Australia. I have considred doing that on eay actually.....never got around to it too!

Vani that jcrew skirt looks great, maybe a tad short though for me. I was thinking of getting the Boden one in tall length. Hmmmm!!

Tam, I have a similar but not identical pencil skirt to that Boden skirt - I think it was last year's equivalent of the same style, and the main difference is that my version had pockets. I wasn't able to snag the denim color before it ran out in my size so I have the velvet green color instead, which I also love. (Here are a couple photos in case it's helpful to see it on someone.)

In general, I MUCH prefer back or side entry zippers to front zippers. The zipper in front adds more bulk - and since I have a tummy, it's definitely an area where I don't need extra bulk - and it doesn't look sleek when you have a top that is slightly overlapping it. I still have and wear some skirts with a front fly zipper, like my casual denim skirt, but have to be much more careful about layering when I wear them.

Kari thanks for the advice and for posting pics. I have admired that skirt on you before! I'm assuming that is the regular length right? I think I'm going to give the denim skirt a go in long if/when I finally crumble!

Tam - you're very welcome, and yes, both of those skirts are regular length, and you'd probably want a long if you want it to hit at or below the knee. Keep in mind, though, that I have a very high rise and short waist, so my skirts hike up a bit higher than the average 5'5" woman.
