Dear Fabbers, I would be very grateful for any thoughts or ideas you may have on a denim shirt. I quite like this one by The Kooples, it's pricey, so I need to sure. Aspects I like are the fluid fabric, the embroidery and the short length. I'm not so sure about the tabs detail on the back (may be too fussy ? And may be I'd get bored with it?). Thank you for looking and any thoughts would be most welcome.

I have a few denim shirts in different blue washes (light, mid + dark). The lyocell fabric ones do have a lovely fluidity that some of the more traditional denims don't have.
Could the tabs be removed - and you could roll or scrunch the sleeves if needed.? The embroidery is pretty (perhaps just a trend though) so personally if I were choosing I'd probably go for a plain denim shirt+ just find the embroidered version at a cheaper price point.

I would also be worried about the embroidery being a time limited feature in an expensive item. I try to make my most costly purchases solid modern classics or avant-garde pieces that I know will have longevity. If this top only had the tabs but not the embroidery, I would purchase it. IMO, the tabs look interesting and are a deliberate exaggeration of a classic detail. They make the shirt unique and seem to be the point of the design. If you don't like the tabs you might as well purchase a cheaper cropped denim shirt. Denim shirts can be found in abundance in all styles and fabrications.

Denim shirts are a big item in my wardrobe. I wear mine constantly. I prefer a denim shirt without embroidery and in a more classic shape. The one you are showing has a shape that requires some shoulders. Just my opinion.
I had a denim shirt with tabs. I never used them. I can roll my sleeves up without any help from tabs.

Thank you for your advice. It helped considerably and consequently I satisfied my need for a denim top with a less pricey top that I know I can wear over the coming few weeks of the last of summer / early autumn. I will post some photos over the weekend but here are some screen shots.

I like the second top much better, have to say. I wouldn't know what to do with the first...

I like the embroidery but the shape of the Kooples is tricky : oversized and short, so quite boxy.
I like the second one better, as long as you don't want to wear it under a blazer (the sleeves might get in the way
I never think of Massimo Dutti, I should have look at what they're doing.

the embroidery on the other shirt I think I would have been bored with and the width at the shoulders may have felt too much for me

I like Massimo, the SA are helpful and clothes are laid out in the stores neatly, and it's easy to see things.

I agree with the others and what Sterling said about the second top. It is great worn alone if your climate is good in the fall for that weight, but could be a problem if to get those sleeves under a jacket.

I think chambray shirts are a classic so I would keep looking for a plainer one, maybe for next year. you can wear them with a fun printed skirt (love that look!)

May I suggest a regular modern classic denim shirt, Jane? You can layer over shirt sleeves but not as easily over bell sleeves.

Thank you Joy and Smitie, and Angie. I have had a try on, and the topper issue is a problem. Thank you so much for highlighting this to me.

In trying it on, the fabric is lovely and less denimy, which I think will work well for me. I like the crisp blue colour too. It is also shortish, so there isn't a lot of fabric when tucked in, which also works for me.

So a useful part of the hunt for a denim shirt, but it isn't right, so...next!

I like the second one but it would not work well under a topper. Very pretty though.
I agree with Angie about a classic denim shirt. I have always had one in my closet. It gets a lot of use. My latest is from J. Crew. I plan on getting a second from Rails.

I am not a denim shirt girl. I have never owned one, or a denim jacket. Only jeans, and one skirt ever when I was 15. I assume you have owned and worn them in the past Jane? I find the second one pretty, mainly because it doesn't look as denim-y!

Jenni, I haven't owned a denim jacket for over 20 years and I had a denim shirt about 10 years ago. So I am kind of in your camp! I really wanted a soft blue shirt that had a denim feel to it I suspect. The second one has such lovely fabric that is almost not denim. So I am happy with a denim on that end of the denim spectrum.

That said, the reason the top one attracted is because it is outside of my normal range of clothing, I thought kind of classic but with a feminine twist with the embroidery and the tabs at the back. The velvet pleated skirt is out of my comfort zone, but I really like it, and it will become a workhorse for my weekend wardrobe.

On the bell sleeve top, I am just slightly hesitating on taking it back because of the trip to Jakata in October. It might be a good top for there, but I was thinking I would put together a different post with the pieces I was going to take away.

I love denim shirts. The right one can be a huge asset to any wardrobe.

I felt this wasn't the right one for you and I was having trouble phrasing why I thought you should keep looking. Luckily, the rest of the Forum found the words.

I think a denim shirt is a great idea and if it stretches your wardrobe boundaries so much the better. I have one comment. I own three. The one I reach for 90 percent of the time is 100 percent cotton. What is the fabrication of the capped sleeved top? Are you good with that? I like it a lot because it is interesting and would serve you well in Jakarta. But it has to feel good against the skin.

Sterling, thank you for your care with words yesterday. It was such a helpful set of responses.

The bell sleeved top feels good against the skin - I really like the fabric and I like the top. The topper issue makes me wary. But for Jakata it would be lovely, especially as it is an end of summer purchase, because I won't have worn it much by the time I go.
