Denim Jacket - Am I In or Am I Out?

Firstly, since this song has been going around in my head every time I think about this teeny tiny matter, I think it is only fitting that you should also share the experience. (Agony? ecstasy? I can't decide!)

As such, I am requesting that you henceforth imagine Katy Perry singing in the background as you read my following little gripe/dilemma and pretty please reply....

In keeping with my gripe about Australia being backward in being forward, last weekend I read an interesting article in the Courier Mail (QLD newspaper) about the "Hot, new, trend of denim on denim". "Oh YAY!" I thought, we are not as backward as I initially thought. However......

I could not believe my eyes when I read that this supposed "world class" stylist state (in bold type no less) that despite this new trend being in style, that "Denim jackets are still OUT!" What the?! How can they be so OUT, when they are so IN in the Northern Hemisphere?!

As such, what I would love to know is your honest to goodness truth - would you really, truly, honestly, "cross your fingers hope to die, stick a needle in your eye" without a single doubt, HAPPILY wear a jacket (or other item of clothing that has been deemed "out of fashion") out and about in public? Would you feel self-conscious?

I'm very curious to know! I haven't decided yet. Abnormally hot weather has meant that I haven't had to make a "crunch" decision yet, and I'm still pondering....

Well I don't know about USA, but here in my corner of the world (Portugal), denin on denin is very in, but not with a denin jacket, most stylish matches are:

Denin vest or denin shirt or denin moto jacket with jeans but in a different color of denin (let's say denin blue vest with white jeans).

Katie, what a cute post. Last night we ate dinner in a trendy restaurant that is out a bit from the city. The place was packed with well dressed couples of all ages, but what struck me was that many of the women were wearing jean jackets with a frock, myself included as well as another woman in our party. I wondered if they all read Angie's blog!

Well, I've seen many denim jackets in the stores... and I've seen many people wearing them out and about (myself included!) so I'd like to think they are still very in. I agree with Louise -- I see denim jackets are a classic staple. I think it just depends on the cut/fit/style of the denim jacket.

Funny! I actually read in Harper's Bazaar many months ago (maybe last fall?) that denim jackets are out.

However, ask me if I care what Harper's Bazaar thinks when they work so well in my wardrobe!

Denim jackets are a classic! I don't think that they have ever really been out of style. The cuts and denim washes have changed over time though.

I agree, I think that denim jackets are classic. I have a moto style one that gets worn in the spring and the fall.

I read in Vogue yesterday that patterns are out. I read in Marie Claire a minute later that patterns are the biggest thing this season. Hilarious.

The sleeveless denim jacket is all the rage at the moment as the updated item. For me that would defeat the purpose because I wear a denim jacket to keep warm so I need long sleeves. I definitely vote in, in, in! The same way pearls are always in fashion.

But what a great chance to set your own style! Denim jacket with a frock, or over over non-denim clothes is probably my favorite way to go because of the contrast in something less casual with the denim.

And when Joy mentioned being out to dinner and saw a number of ladies wearing a frock with denim jacket, at least then that won't happen to you YOU can be the trend setter!

Also, I know for me, when someone is obviously well put together and polished looking, and they have something on (clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc.) that I had dismissed as unfashionable or dated or unflattering, I sit up and take notice and reconsider that item again for myself. . .

Absolutely, and I wouldn't feel at all self-conscious.

Because a) ignorance is bliss (i.e, the question pre-supposes that I would actually know that somebody had decreed that whatever I was wearing was "out"), and b) I'm old enough to know that what goes around, comes around - who knows? Maybe I'm on the cutting edge of back "in" again!

It could be wishful thinking, but I think denim jackets are just starting to come back in and we're a little early. It all goes with the 80s style coming back around. I'm wearing a jacket a lot like the one I used to wear!

Neither "in" nor "out" but classic. Every Spring the stores around here are stocked with denim jackets. ( Stick a needle in my eye and hope to die ).

As a fellow Aussie KP I do know what you mean about denim jackets supposedly being out of style. I would have never thought of wearing one until I found YLF, I havent owned a denim jacket for a good 10 years or more. I have often seen the mainstream jeans retailers try different variations of the jeans jackets (blazer style, cropped, bleached, ripped etc.) but it's rare to find the classicly cut jacket anymore. Hence why I had to get mind from the op-shop (thrift store). Regarding if they are in fashion or not - I am learning to ignore to a certain extent what is "in" and what's "out" and prefer instead to try and find clothes that are a good fit and suit me. If I so happen to pick up something that is "in" and it looks great on me well that's just a bonus. I think anything worn with the right additude, confidence and pizazz has the potential to look great regardless of whether some magazine or "those in the know" say it's in fashion or not.

WOW!!!! What a great bunch of comments - you all have some very interesting perspectives and insights. It seems the over-riding consensus is to go-for-it.

Accordingly, I have decided that I shall wear my ca-ute little denim jacket (from the op-shop no less) with attitood and a devil-may-care smile!

Stay tuned for photos over the next few months as we finally, FINALLY get colder.... And I'll post later in the winter season if there appears to be any changes that the jacket changes from being an "out" to an "in" that reflects the NH style trend.

Katiepea, if the Courier-Mail is anything like the West Australian, I wouldn't be taking any style tips from them Aussie newspapers are pretty much based on press-releases and filler material written by a few people covering as many roles as possible - for all we know, the fashion column is written by the same person who has to cover the local cricket games

Yes, I know deep down that I shouldn't pay any attention, but I just can't help it! Stringy, your comment made me giggle, I have images of a balding, overweight middle-aged man with chinese sauce stains on his "disney" tie (tucked into his trousers) writing the article under the guise of being a "top fashion stylist".... Goodness, my imagination seems prolific today!

Well this thread turned out pretty amusing before I could add my proasic point to it - which was that I have been looking to upgrade my denim jacket and haven't been able to find one so far that fits my specifications, ie , cropped, fitted and dark wash. I ordered one from Ezibuy (one Karen pointed out, but Angie warned against) that came today but will be sending it back. It is too long and too big.

I don't really know about the trendy thing though
