Denim dilemma - YouLookFab Forum

Hi, all! I'm slowly transitioning into "spring" mode as our weather finally warms up a bit. My main requirement this year (at least so far) is a white denim refresher.

I ordered two pair of jeans from Zara. High waisted crops, and mid-rise baggy selvedge. They aren't really mid rise on me, but more medium high rise, which is fine.

1. The high waisted crops are, alas, not cropped on me. And it might be difficult to alter them because of the way they are sewn -- they have a deep seam allowance that might be tough to pick out and re-jig for the length I need. I guess my seamstress will be the best judge of that, but I've tried to show what I mean in pic 3.

Also visible in pic 3, they have a really fun seam down the front, making them more like "sailor pants" -- a little dressier than regular jeans, in my mind. They are true optic white.

Alas, they hit just at the top of my shoes right now, the sort of bothersome length that makes you feel you are catching them up in your shoe as you move, you know? They're a bit better with the sandal, but still not great.

Thoughts?

2. The other jeans are a slightly softer white. I like them but don't know what length I would go with. I'm unlikely to wear them full length and I'm not sure they work that well as crops. I can easily send either or both pairs back and try again elsewhere. My other white jeans are an off-white pair of barrel jeans from Zara. I could probably manage with two pair.

I agree that the lengths as they come aren’t the best — but the cuffed versions are chic to my eye. The higher cuff in pic 6 looks a bit bulky. Maybe you could cut with scissors, not worry about hemming and then cuff? I admit to having chopped numerous jeans with scissors, skipping hemming.

Queen Pedantic about Pant Lengths reporting for duty! Here's my 2 cents:

#1, #4 and #5 - totally on trend, and works! With oxfords and sandals.

#2 - a little more polished and summery with good view of the alluring ankle. This is what you are used to! Ask a tailor what they can do about that. Might have a creative solution.

#6 - I prefer the FULL length cuff on your right leg You can also have them hemmed to that full slightly slouchier length to avoid the cuff. Or press the wide cuff!

I'm terrible at assessing these types of things but I'd say that photo#2 looks very flattering. So if the seamstress has a method that can achieve that result, it could be worth the alteration but if you're not convinced these are what your really after just continue the hunt.

Thank you all. You've confirmed what I suspected -- a trip to the tailor is in order! I think I will keep the wide leg pair and send the selvedge pair back, simply because I like them best full length, too, and I know I won't wear them that way in summer. I'd be better with a skirt instead.

I like the length in 1 and 4 and I feel like this is how a lot of my wide legs fit. Almost to the floor but not quite. I find that length very versatile because it works well with flat sandals, sneakers, and boots with any length of shaft.

I also like the length in 2 with a bit more skin shown too. It's always nice to show a little skin when it's hot outside.

So my pick of the bunch, based on the pics alone, would be the first pair at their full length (Angie's new full length?). But I hear you about catching on your shoes and that would be a deal breaker. I think they will also look good hemmed but the roll up is a bit distorting and maybe I would go a smidge higher.
White jeans as a concept are smashing on you though!

As to the 2 pair you have shown here , I much prefer the first pair for fit alone . Something seems off with the second pair to my eye . Regarding length though ? That’s a tough one but I don’t mind them either way . I have the same Zara pair from last summer and hope to wear them again this year although I haven’t tried them on . I’m right off barrel legs though so hoping my memory of them not being terribly dramatic are correct . I ordered a pair of mid rise girlfriend jeans in white from BR Factory and they are a great fit for me and my needs . Looking forward to being able to wear them in another month or two !

Lisa, that is so funny -- you are right -- those jeans do look similar. But wow, the price tag is TOTALLY different. $59.95 for the Zara version -- way more my speed!

I think the second pair are a bit tough to judge because they are sooooo long -- it's just impossible to imagine how they'd look hemmed, really. I'm probably sending them back.

Jaime, thanks -- I always wear white jeans in summer and I do like a little skin to show and also it's just nicer in hot weather. So I will probably crop them.

I really like them both! I don’t think the first pair is too long but agree that shorter would look more summery.

I like the second pair more, since I'm not a fan of the big pockets on the first, and say wear them full length. Good for cold spring days!

I also like the second pair but both look like they fit well. Length is such a hard thing to figure out these days. For summer, a crop seems like it would be the most comfortable.

This reminds me that I need to haul out my white jeans and see if they still fit! Ugh.

Oh I know - that price point is a bit dramatic and way out of my comfort zone too, but you never know.....

For what it's worth, I love the first pair as shown in #1 especially. I have a pair of dark denim jeans in exactly the same cut and length, minus the pockets but with the same wide cuffs, front seams, etc. I waffled about the length on mine before getting them but now I wear them a lot and like the showcasing of my shoes. I think they are very cute on you. But you have to feel right in them.

All of these to me look like easy-breezy spring/summer pants, if that is what you are going for, whether you roll them, hem them or not. Do you like a cigarette silhouette? Because if you decide to go shopping again, I bet that would look great on you.

I like the first pair much better Suz, the pockets and the front seam just make them, they look more interesting than the other pair. I like them as they come, show off your shoes really well. I would wear them like that if they were mine.
They do look good cropped as well if your tailor can help.

I like the first pair better for waist/hip fit and detailing. No strong opinion on length. I’m optimistic about that hem being alterable.

Thanks, all! I think I'm taking the first pair to the tailor to see what can be done. I am sure I will wear them more with a slight crop -- just above the ankle bone. They are for summer, not cool spring, so that's why I'm sure the crop will be better for me. I like that length in summer. I think I will return the other pair because while it's fine, it's not necessary.
