dear girl-on-the-bus,
today is a crappy day; i get that. it is drizzly and gray and miserable and neither of us wants to be on this bus heading to work, or wherever it is you're heading. i'm sure you have a nice, warm, cozy bed you've just left at home, and i'm sure you're really wishing you could be back in it right now. maybe you have the beginnings of the flu, and your head feels like it's about to explode. i know mine does.
maybe that's why, when i boarded the bus, you gave my outfit the once-over and then shot me a look of such disdain that it managed to pierce the pre-flu funk i'm in and rattle me. i understand my jersey dress, cardigan, scarf, boot and jacket combo may be quite boring and conservative, but i can't quite understand why you shot me a look of such complete venom. you looked like you were quite ready to jab me in the chest with your black pointy-toed stilleto patent boots, paired with faded skinny jeans with artful rips in the knees. perhaps you didn't think i was appropriately dressed for the weather; i understand i may have looked quite underdressed in my tan jacket, but i assure you, while it may not be quite as toasty as your cropped baby phat puffer with the fur on the hood, it did the job quite nicely.
whatever it is, i know you must be a very busy person - you didn't even have time to apply makeup at home, which explains why you kept reaching for product after product to apply on your face from your voluminous black bag (though i noticed your dyed platinum blonde hair was perfectly coifed - maybe that's what took up all your time) - so i appreciate that you took the time to look up, make a face that i can only describe as the physical equivalent of saying "eww" at me, look at your friend with one raised eyebrow as if to say "really? that? what was she thinking?" and then go back to applying your cosmetics. maybe next time (perhaps when i don't feel like crap and somehow allow little things to get to me), i'll put more thought into how i dress. just for you.
