I wouldn’t buy a coat without being able to close it. Just like I don’t understand rain coats without hoods. However, they make a lot without hoods, so many people must be living differently than me.
I might see that for some kind of special dressy coat, but I don’t have a need for that.
I run cold do sm likely to WEAR a coat when others would not, and then adjust ( open/ close). Such as for chilly mornings. But I definitely need the option.
Blazers are different- I almost never button and don’t rely on them for major warmth alone.
For me there is such a thing as a coat that doesn't close over my abdomen, I'm afraid. Comes of being an apple with small shoulders? It's why I love my short swing shaped coat so much
delurked -- can't speak for other people but I almost never use hoods because they wreak havoc with my curly hair. If the temperatures go below, say ten degrees F, I will use the hood on my puffer and endure fuzzy hair for the rest of the day. Otherwise, no hoods for me.
Hmm. The MK coat I bought at NAS this year doesn't close. Of course I'm not going to wear it on the coldest days, but for someone who wants a variety of coat styles, I don't think ALL my coats need to have a closure. This one is more for fashion than strictly function. I usually add a scarf when heading out anyway, which helps eliminate the chill. And these days I run warmer than I used to, so I don't always want to be 100% bundled up.
I think it would depend on what kind of occasion the coat is for. If I'm going straight from the car into a building, I could see wearing it. I'm in west Michigan and we get a lot of cold and snow. It wouldn't be worn on the coldest days though.
I grew up in Florida, and I never owned a coat or jacket that didn’t close - unless I gained weight, in which case I would eventually bring myself to say adieu.
I make several Florida trips a year, but even when we eventually retire here, I can’t imagine buying a coat that doesn’t close. Cardigans, yes. Casual jacket, maybe. But a coat... no. If it’s too warm outside to close a coat, I’m wearing something else
I can understand that in a lot of climates, a coat that doesn't close may not be the worst thing. But I'd always want to have the option to close it, if I travel or if it becomes unusually cold.
Don’t know about the particular coat you are referencing, but I do own one coat that I removed the snaps from because I never wore it closed and I hated the look of the snaps showing. Admittedly, I run hot and live in a warm climate.
Of course, blazers can be worn open, and the same goes for many other kinds of jackets and thin coats. Items like these are often worn either indoors (year round) or outdoors in spring, summer and fall, and perhaps even outdoors in a mild winter climate. But if you have to be outside for more than a few minutes in freezing temperatures, you need a real winter coat that can be closed.
Funny I guess it's climate related. I rarely close my coats but I do like the option to do so. BUT aesthetically I love the look of a coat without fastenings and would be easily swayed to buy one.
When I see things like this, I just assume it's for the people who live in the southern part of the U.S. What gets frustrating is when it seems like a very large portion of the offerings are of this type, and you can't find a decent winter coat to save your life.
Well, I run cold and button up all the way. Then, I tie a scarf round and round my neck to make sure no cold gets in!
Earlier this season I hemmed and hawed over a lovely Theory coat marked down 75% that crisis crossed over the chest and had two tiny snaps at the neck. It really was intended to be worn open in a kind of waterfall of lovely pale grey and navy blue wool and cashmere. I imagined waiting for the train in the still dark morning, and swirling snow, and took a pass on the coat.
Weather and practicality aside, Deborah's style is so different from mine, she has such an appreciation for the actual structure and construction of clothes and she wears such unusual pieces with such confidence, I know if she wore one of these, it would look completely right.
