Dad Made it to the Skilled Nursing Facility

He had one good day, and they decided to transfer him. He's doing ok- walking more now, but he was calling my sister all last night. We're going to visit him tomorrow .

We went to visit my dad tonight. I don't think they will keep him long- he had thrown his dinner on the floor and said he spent the afternoon yelling for help ( he thinks nobody knows he's there). He was like Dory from Finding Nemo- every few minutes he would ask the same question again.

It is virtually impossible to keep dementia patients isolated (Covid) & sometimes inappropriate roommates are assigned, so there is that.

We're not looking for a permanent place for him (nor was this ever supposed to be permanent). We just need his hip to heal more before he comes home. My sister has a bad back, and my mother is in her 70's and frail. He isn't walking yet, and they can't bear his weight to help him.

Dementia, delirium, loss of inhibitions; I dealt with all of this with my own father. It is all awful and I am sure you are all doing the best you can and COVID complicates everything. If it possible to take turns staying in his room, especially overnight, that might help to keep him there a little longer, although it will be exhausting. You are in the prayers of many.

Hoping all smooths out for your dad and you. If he knows the place is temporary, that may help his attitude but with the dementia, now is his reality. The food will be important. Where my dad was. A man at his table in the dining room had several daughters. One at least was there at every meal and they brought McDonalds fries for everyone at the table. A few of those fries made everything better.. he also liked that he could always get coffee and soft serve ice cream. Those things kept him happy. There was always fresh popcorn at a movie night. The facility welcomed your old family movie CD’s and even old magazines and puzzles. Some older women there asked for embroidery or knitting supplies. There is usually a local organization that needs hand knitted lap robes or scarves or baby things. Some have gotten donations of yarn that are made available to knitters.

Oh I do hope he improves. Have you had any good news about possible home care when he leaves there? I know you said your Mom and sister couldn’t manage if he was still not walking.

I am really sorry to hear this news, dealing with family sickness is very difficult for everyone involved. At least your Dad is on the mend and hopefully will adapt to his new surroundings.

Joy- that sounds nice. Very different than the place my dad is. Most of the patients there seem to be bed ridden. I would imagine that's why they are there. My sister said his heart medicine affects the way things taste to him (which is why he doesn't take it at home). They are making him take it there, so even the food they brought in doesn't taste good to him and he didn't eat much.
My sister said he's a little better each day, but he still calls her at night (begging her to come get him).
He does get PT while he's there, so his walking should keep improving.

What can be done about the heart meds? I can see not having your food taste good would be a real quality of life issue, especially if you can’t do many of the things you used to enjoy. I agree with the doctor, JennNZ, and hope some assistance can be arranged for when he does go home. Simply “staying strong” can’t last for years. Needing help doesn’t mean anyone has failed, just that it’s a big task. That said, my heart goes out to you & your family watching him struggle and I wish you strength.
