Curious -- who buys things from the "Resort" collections?

I don't, unless I pick something up later in the spring, on sale. I don't go on a tropical vacation in the winter.

Another thought -- is one of the purposes of "Resort" to determine what sells, so buyers can buy right for spring?

I go on tropical vacations in the winter--so nice! I don't buy "resort" clothing, though, and don't understand the purpose of it.

No - for some reason its just too frou-frou for my taste. But, I already live in a semi-tropical region, so I don't feel like I need anything that is specifically "resort wear!"

Even when I vacation, I hardly live a "resort" lifestyle... I guess I'm not in the target market.

That's a good one. I suppose people who hate winter and have another motive to buy summer clothes when sunning in Caribbean?:)
Or have to attend destination weddings?
I never been sunning in the winter though. I'm just speculating. I don't even see resorts collection in the shops I go.

Mm. You know, I think Resort is actually for the winter holidays. My dad was from Jamaica, so we'd go at X-mas and do New Year's at one of the beach resorts. I'd be shopping for bathing suits in December. A lot of big families seemed to gather at the resorts. I think it's an Eastern seaboard kind of thing.

ETA: Oh yeah, I wanted to say that I also don't think I've actually seen Resort collection stuff in stores in years. Except for the service of providing a bathing suit in winter, I think they're usually pretty jarring - all acid yellow in the middle of winter. And I'll tell you what, Jamaica at least is NOT that hot in winter.

I don't have that many retail shopping opportunities, I shop on line and I am seeing a lot of resort collections being launched right now. I do agree it is an Eastern seaboard thing, the tradition of going to FL or to some island over the holidays.

Being from the West Coast, I am much more likely to go skiing during the winter.

I am surprised so many designers bother to make a resort collection. Go to Shopbop, you will see what I am talking about. I see some doing a "holiday" collection, again makes more sense to me.

Ja, I agree. Ski trips are much more West Coast.

But I must be getting old. I'm going back and forth on how new Resort is. I think Resort as RESORT!!! has been pushed in recent years to drive sales. Like starting X-mas before Halloween.

Afew years ago I was going on a warm weather cruise in early Feb, and needed clothes for it. The resort collection didn't hit the shops here until right when I was leaving, leaving me out of luck, the one time I needed it! Or maybe they skipped reset and went to early Spring?

A few years ago, my husband surprised me with a cruise - I was happy to find some board shorts and a pretty bathing suit cover-up in January. These were found in a section of a dept.store that had some 'resort-wear'. Other than this, no ....can't really say I buy things from resort collections.

i also find resort collections odd. i am from the east coast and also much more likely to go skiing in the winter...now a new ski hat? that i need!

I don't know. A salesgal at Nordstrom pointed out the Resort collection to me the other day. To which my response was, "Does it include a tropical vacation?" j. crew does it too and it just makes me cranky to look at people in bathing suits, for so many reasons.

I haven't seen tried-and-true "resort collections" here in years. (I DO have vague recollections of "cruise wear" at The Bay & Simpsons - dept stores, one now defunct. Basically it consisted of dressier-type summer clothing & swim wear.) Could Resort be an umbrella term in the fashion/retail world for out-of-season summer clothes, sold in locations where we experience cold weather 7 months of the year and need stylish summery stuff to wear for yes, tropical trips...?

I've been to several resorts in winter months, and guests are usually just in summer clothing (and fancier stuff at night), although the more senior-aged guests seem to be very well-pressed and matchy-matchy beyond what you'd wear lounging around in the sun/buffet-eating/latin music listening - so maybe true "Resort" wear is for the older generation...? I just brought sun dresses, coverups, bathing suit, and dinner-appropriate items (always a dress code). Cuba is HOT.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever bought anything from resort collections. Nothing comes to mind. I do know in the past I've had a hard time finding new things for a winter trip to the southern hemisphere. I generally don't go to "resorts" though. We did go to Hawaii at Christmas a few years ago, but it was not that warm. I've got photos of me wearing long-sleeved tops and cotton cardigans.

Perhaps resort is a chance to look at early spring clothes. I'll be going on a cruise early next year, but my closet still has many items from the last two years I will be taking for one last outing.
